Synopsis Light and Video Microscopy by : Randy O. Wayne
The purpose of this book is to provide the most comprehensive, easy-to-use, and informative guide on light microscopy. Light and Video Microscopy will prepare the reader for the accurate interpretation of an image and understanding of the living cell. With the presentation of geometrical optics, it will assist the reader in understanding image formation and light movement within the microscope. It also provides an explanation of the basic modes of light microscopy and the components of modern electronic imaging systems and guides the reader in determining the physicochemical information of living and developing cells, which influence interpretation. - Brings together mathematics, physics, and biology to provide a broad and deep understanding of the light microscope - Clearly develops all ideas from historical and logical foundations - Laboratory exercises included to assist the reader with practical applications - Microscope discussions include: bright field microscope, dark field microscope, oblique illumination, phase-contrast microscope, photomicrography, fluorescence microscope, polarization microscope, interference microscope, differential interference microscope, and modulation contrast microscope

Synopsis Son of (Entropy)2 by : Peter C. Mayer
Their son, mostly for fun, writes this collection of vignettes about two prominent scientists. The forward includes a description of the two, summarizing their character and their careers. The summary contains an explanation of the title, Entropy Squared. The forward ends with remarks about the accuracy of the vignettes. Some vignettes include a representation of the impact on the son and some have historical significance. The first two sections concern Gttingen, Germany, from where that American, Joe, as a fellow student put it, acquired his wife. The first section of Gttingen vignettes is from the time of meeting and from visits until World War II. The second is from after the War. Marias career at Sarah Lawrence College separates sections of their supporting the World War II war effort, Joe at the Ballistics Research Laboratory of Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Maria with the Manhattan, nuclear bomb, Project. The Sarah Lawrence College section goes beyond memories because biographers have said little about Marias time at Sarah Lawrence. Sections concerning each are followed by a section on Maria receiving of the Nobel Prize. The conclusion is a memorial to Joe.

Synopsis A Physicist Remembers by : Richard J. Weiss
A Physicist Remembers traces the effort to measure electron charge, spin, and momentum density on atoms and solids and to compare experiment with theory. Since the complexity of electron arrangements leads to subtle property changes in atoms, molecules and solids, theory and experiment have generally differed by about 1%. The Sagamore conferences have made inroads in reducing this difference. Since 1963 the triennial Sagamore conferences have been held in New York, France, Russia, Finland, Portugal, Germany, Canada, Japan, and England, attracting thousands of participants. Richard J Weiss, original organizer of these conferences, describes the evolution of the X-ray, neutron, and positron probes employed in these measurements. He has performed research with Francis Jenkins at the University of California at Berkeley, Simon Pasternack at Brookhaven National Laboratory, John Slater and B Warren at MIT, Peter Wohlfarth at Imperial College London, M Hart at King''s College London, and Sir N Mott at Cavendish Laboratory.
