Performative Intergenerational Dialogues of a Black Quartet promotes the importance of intergenerational Black dialogue as a collaborative spirit-making across race, genders, sexualities, and cultures to bridge time and space. The authors enter this dialogue in a crisis moment: a crisis moment at the confluence of a pandemic, the national political transition of leadership in the United States, the necessary rise of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color activism—in the face of the continued murders of unarmed Black and queer people by police. And as each author mourns the loss of loved ones who have left us through illness, the contiguity of time, or murder, we all hold tight to each other and to memory as an act of keeping them alive in our hearts and actions, remembrance as an act of resistance so that the circle will be unbroken. But they also come together in the spirit of hope, the hope that bleeds the borders between generations of Black teacher-artist-scholars, the hope that we find in each other’s joy and laughter, and the hope that comes when we hear both stories of struggle and strife and stories of celebration and smile that lead to possibilities and potentialities of our collective being and becoming—as a people. So, the authors offer stories of witness, resistance, and gettin’ ovah, stories that serve as a road map from Black history and heritage to a Black futurity that is mythic and imagined but that can also be actualized and embodied, now. This book will be of interest to scholars, students, and activists in a wide range of disciplines across the social sciences and performance studies.

Bangla (Bengali), an Eastern Indo-Aryan Language, is the national language of Bangladesh with 150 million speakers and the state language of Paschim Banga (West Bengal) in India with 90 million speakers. There are sizeable communities of Bengalis scattered all over the world. Altogether, the number of native speakers make Bangla the fifth or sixth largest language in the world. Like Hindi and other South Asian languages, Bangla has subject-object-verb word order, postpositions, causative and compound verbs. Unlike Hindi it has no gender. This volume presents a systematic overview of the language, from the sound system to parts of speech, syntactic categories to reduplicative features and some short text passages. The book is written in transliteration throughout to provide ease and convenience to non-Bengali as well as to Bengali linguists and students. Kastur Kapadia was betrothed to the mighty Mahatma Gandhi, father of modern India, when they were both just seven years old. The couple married when they were thirteen and Kastur had five children, the first of whom was born when she was sixteen. Though Gandhi's name has become synonymous with asceticism, this biography reveals that he enjoyed a sensuous, loving relationship with Kastur. Daughter of Midnight is the result of a lifetime of research by Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma and Kastur. As well as recounting historical events behind the birth of a nation, Daughter of Midnight is also a love story, which ended with the terrible tragedy of Gandhi's assassination by a Hindu extremist in New Delhi in 1948. Though Gandhi's strength and resolution defeated all the resources of the British Empire he was not always confident, the author reveals. When the young Gandhi, as a barrister in Bombay, could not open his mouth for fear during his first ever court case, Kastur consoled him and soothed the humiliation he felt at being laughed at by his contemporaries. The woman who shared Gandhi's sorrows, his triumphs and his tragedies also knew the flaws and human frailities of the great leader.
