Synopsis Raising a Tsushima Horse by : Jace Cooper

The "Tsushima horse" is a type of horse unique to Japan's Tsushima Island. Located between Japan and South Korea in the Korea Strait is Tsushima Island. Tsushima horses are a miniature breed that has thrived in the harsh conditions of the island. These horses are typically bay or chestnut in color, and their height ranges from 12 to 13 hands (48 to 52 inches at the shoulder). Because of their hardiness and strength, they are highly prized on Tsushima Island. Tsushima horses have been a staple of island life for generations, serving as means of transportation, working in the fields, and, more recently, as a symbol of the island's cultural heritage. The protection and preservation of this breed has been a priority. These horses are considered a unique and important part of the cultural and historical heritage of Tsushima Island and Japan as a whole.

Synopsis The Family Horse by : George A. Martin

Excerpt from The Family Horse: Its Stabling, Care and Feeding, a Practical Manual for Horse-Keepers Of the thirteen million horses which are estimated to be owned in the United States, fully two millions are kept in cities and villages. All of these, besides many of those classed as farm horses, are purchased after they have attained full growth, and have been broken to harness or saddle. The owners of such horses have no personal interest in questions relating to breeding or early training; but the subsequent care, feeding and management are matters of daily importance to them. It is to meet the wants of such persons that this work was prepared. Breeding and training are not discussed in its pages, but it treats of the daily care, shelter and management of horses, whether kept for work or pleasure. The subject of feeding is examined at some length, both from a scientific and a practical point of view. The horse well merits the most careful, judicious and humane treatment. It is the willing, affectionate servant of man, bearing his burdens and ministering to his pleasure. Yet no other domestic animal is subject to so great and varied an amount of suffering and disability. Nearly, if not quite all, of these are the result of either well-meant ignorance or willful maltreatment. A vast mass of quackery, empiricism and superstition in regard to horse management has become traditional. Much of this is being dispelled through the efforts of enlightened American veterinary practitioners and horse-keepers. This work is in full sympathy with the ideas and practices of such men. The last four chapters were originally published in the American Agriculturist. They were awarded the highest prizes in a competition which drew out more than seventy essays, the examining committee being composed of men recognized as leading authorities in horse matters. Synopsis War and Faith by : Carol Richmond Tsang

"During the sengoku era--the period of ""warring provinces"" in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Japan--warlords vied for supremacy and sought to expand their influence over the realm. Powerful religious institutions also asserted their military might by calling upon their adherents to do battle against forces that threatened their spiritual and secular interests. The Honganji branch of Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land Sect) Buddhism was one such powerhouse that exercised its military will by fanning violent uprisings of ikko ikki, loosely structured ""leagues of one mind"" made up of mostly commoners who banded together to fight for (or against) any number of causes--usually those advanced by the Honganji’s Patriarch.Carol Richmond Tsang delves into the complex and often contradictory relationship between these ikko leagues and the Honganji institution. Moving beyond the simplistic characterization of ikki as peasant uprisings, the author argues cogently for a fuller picture of ikko ikki as a force in medieval Japanese history. By exploring the political motivations and machinations of the Honganji and the diverse aims and allegiances of its ikko followers, Tsang complicates our understanding of ikko ikki as a multifaceted example of how religion and religious belief played out in a society in conflict."
