We prove that the kernel of the action of the modular group on the center of a semisimple factorizable Hopf algebra is a congruence subgroup whenever this action is linear. If the action is only projective, we show that the projective kernel is a congruence subgroup. To do this, we introduce a class of generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators and endow it with an action of the modular group that is compatible with the original one.

Synopsis Hochschild Cohomology, Modular Tensor Categories, and Mapping Class Groups I by : Simon Lentner
The book addresses a key question in topological field theory and logarithmic conformal field theory: In the case where the underlying modular category is not semisimple, topological field theory appears to suggest that mapping class groups do not only act on the spaces of chiral conformal blocks, which arise from the homomorphism functors in the category, but also act on the spaces that arise from the corresponding derived functors. It is natural to ask whether this is indeed the case. The book carefully approaches this question by first providing a detailed introduction to surfaces and their mapping class groups. Thereafter, it explains how representations of these groups are constructed in topological field theory, using an approach via nets and ribbon graphs. These tools are then used to show that the mapping class groups indeed act on the so-called derived block spaces. Toward the end, the book explains the relation to Hochschild cohomology of Hopf algebras and the modular group.

Since the publication of its first edition, this book has served as one of the few available on the classical Adams spectral sequence, and is the best account on the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. This new edition has been updated in many places, especially the final chapter, which has been completely rewritten with an eye toward future research in the field. It remains the definitive reference on the stable homotopy groups of spheres. The first three chapters introduce the homotopy groups of spheres and take the reader from the classical results in the field though the computational aspects of the classical Adams spectral sequence and its modifications, which are the main tools topologists have to investigate the homotopy groups of spheres. Nowadays, the most efficient tools are the Brown-Peterson theory, the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the chromatic spectral sequence, a device for analyzing the global structure of the stable homotopy groups of spheres and relating them to the cohomology of the Morava stabilizer groups. These topics are described in detail in Chapters 4 to 6. The revamped Chapter 7 is the computational payoff of the book, yielding a lot of information about the stable homotopy group of spheres. Appendices follow, giving self-contained accounts of the theory of formal group laws and the homological algebra associated with Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. Synopsis Hopf Algebras, Polynomial Formal Groups, and Raynaud Orders by : Lindsay Childs
This volume gives two new methods for constructing $p$-elementary Hopf algebra orders over the valuation ring $R$ of a local field $K$ containing the $p$-adic rational numbers. One method constructs Hopf orders using isogenies of commutative degree 2 polynomial formal groups of dimension $n$, and is built on a systematic study of such formal group laws. The other method uses an exponential generalization of a 1992 construction of Greither. Both constructions yield Raynaud orders as iterated extensions of rank $p$ Hopf algebras; the exponential method obtains all Raynaud orders whose invariants satisfy a certain $p$-adic condition.

Is there a vector space whose dimension is the golden ratio? Of course not—the golden ratio is not an integer! But this can happen for generalizations of vector spaces—objects of a tensor category. The theory of tensor categories is a relatively new field of mathematics that generalizes the theory of group representations. It has deep connections with many other fields, including representation theory, Hopf algebras, operator algebras, low-dimensional topology (in particular, knot theory), homotopy theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, quantum computation, theory of motives, etc. This book gives a systematic introduction to this theory and a review of its applications. While giving a detailed overview of general tensor categories, it focuses especially on the theory of finite tensor categories and fusion categories (in particular, braided and modular ones), and discusses the main results about them with proofs. In particular, it shows how the main properties of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras may be derived from the theory of tensor categories. Many important results are presented as a sequence of exercises, which makes the book valuable for students and suitable for graduate courses. Many applications, connections to other areas, additional results, and references are discussed at the end of each chapter.

Synopsis The Reductive Subgroups of $F_4$ by : David I. Stewart
Let $G=G(K)$ be a simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p\geq 0$. A subgroup $X$ of $G$ is said to be $G$-completely reducible if, whenever it is contained in a parabolic subgroup of $G$, it is contained in a Levi subgroup of that parabolic. A subgroup $X$ of $G$ is said to be $G$-irreducible if $X$ is in no proper parabolic subgroup of $G$; and $G$-reducible if it is in some proper parabolic of $G$. In this paper, the author considers the case that $G=F_4(K)$. The author finds all conjugacy classes of closed, connected, semisimple $G$-reducible subgroups $X$ of $G$. Thus he also finds all non-$G$-completely reducible closed, connected, semisimple subgroups of $G$. When $X$ is closed, connected and simple of rank at least two, he finds all conjugacy classes of $G$-irreducible subgroups $X$ of $G$. Together with the work of Amende classifying irreducible subgroups of type $A_1$ this gives a complete classification of the simple subgroups of $G$. The author also uses this classification to find all subgroups of $G=F_4$ which are generated by short root elements of $G$, by utilising and extending the results of Liebeck and Seitz.

Synopsis Character Identities in the Twisted Endoscopy of Real Reductive Groups by : Paul Mezo
Suppose $G$ is a real reductive algebraic group, $\theta$ is an automorphism of $G$, and $\omega$ is a quasicharacter of the group of real points $G(\mathbf{R})$. Under some additional assumptions, the theory of twisted endoscopy associates to this triple real reductive groups $H$. The Local Langlands Correspondence partitions the admissible representations of $H(\mathbf{R})$ and $G(\mathbf{R})$ into $L$-packets. The author proves twisted character identities between $L$-packets of $H(\mathbf{R})$ and $G(\mathbf{R})$ comprised of essential discrete series or limits of discrete series.
