Synopsis Honor, Fate, and Faith by : Dennis Ricotta
Leaving a loving wife and children to go to war is a difficult decision. Fighting for the better good, however, will driv¬e that decision. Crippled by a bullet, Mason Cald-well returns home. Family will be only part of his healing. People he meets and adven¬tures he experiences bring him strength, peace, and deeper faith in the Lord he loves. For the farm to flourish, Mason must rely on his son Mark. John, the adventurous younger son, finds a niche in law enforce¬ment with a friend he meets on the streets of Crockett. Daughter Jennie finds true love in someone other than a cowboy. Who else is there in Texas besides cowhands or farmers? The local sheriff, however, has a quarrel with Mason, and things get very tense as this relationship comes to a head. A soldier enters the life of "Captain Cald¬well" who needs to right a wrong from the time Mason was shot. A half-breed, Luke has also had a hard life, but love from a crippled girl may just be his redemption. As these folks move through their lives, sharing their respect not only for each other but for all human¬ity, we will see their faith crowned by love from their hearts and grace from above.

Synopsis The Seasons of God by : Richard Blackaby
What season of life are you in? Each of us goes through periods of life that have a certain character—a few months or a few years, good times or difficult circumstances, times of brilliant joy or periods of dark clouds. Often we say, “It’s just the season of life I’m in.” But did you know that just as God has purposes for the seasons of nature, he also uses seasons in your life to grow you, work with you, and talk to you? Richard Blackaby explains in The Seasons of God how understanding the principles of the seasons can offer us hope, direction, insight, and intimacy with God himself. It’s a thoughtful exploration of God’s patterns at work in our lives—how His will is being carried out in the best way…at the best time. Your plans, your relationships, your career, your ministry—all have their unique God-intended moment. God’s Word expresses it this way: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” So what’s your season of life? And what is God telling you through the season you’re in?

Synopsis Honoring the Body by : Stephanie Paulsell
Learn to celebrate your body by attending to daily spiritual practices In Honoring the Body, Stephanie Paulsell speaks to those who have ever wondered how to celebrate the body's pleasures and protect the body's vulnerabilities in a world that seems confused about both. What we need, she shows, are practices that honor the body. Paulsell invites readers to explore how we might honor the body in daily activities--bathing, clothing, eating, working, exercising, loving, and suffering--seeking wisdom from Scripture, history, and contemporary experience, in story and song and poetry. She argues that the accumulated wisdom of religious traditions provides the resources for a rich practice of honoring the body. This practice will not be just an individual practice, however. It will be a shared, communal practice, one we engage in with others. Honoring the Body is for those who want to honor their body and the bodies of others, who wish for a community that cherishes, attends to, celebrates, and soothes the body.

Synopsis Crown of Thorns by : Dennis Ricotta
This is the story of a Roman soldier ordered to perform a duty that will change his life forever. Marcel is directed to find a form of torture for a man on trial who calls himself a king. So he conceives the idea of a crown made of thorns. Though this pleases his commander, as Marcel places the crown on the prisoners head, he unexpectedly suffers his own sudden torture when a thorn pierces his finger. In pain and bloody agony, he looks into the eyes of Jesus yet sees only love. How can love come from such a vicious act? In his quest to learn all he can about this man, Marcel encounters many people, some devoted followers of Jesus and some who mock and detest him. He also experiences his own miracles. One person who will help him on his journey to understand this king is his loving wife Delicia. She will both challenge and comfort him as he struggles with the many questions he strives to answer. Yet in the end, he will have to make a life or death decision.

Synopsis The Illusion of Will, Self, and Time by : Jonathan Bricklin
A Seminary Co-op Notable Book of 2016 William James is often considered a scientist compromised by his advocacy of mysticism and parapsychology. Jonathan Bricklin argues James can also be viewed as a mystic compromised by his commitment to common sense. James wanted to believe in will, self, and time, but his deepest insights suggested otherwise. "Is consciousness already there waiting to be uncovered and is it a veridical revelation of reality?" James asked shortly before his death in 1910. A century after his death, research from neuroscience, physics, psychology, and parapsychology is making the case, both theoretically and experimentally, that answers James's question in the affirmative. By separating what James passionately wanted to believe, based on common sense, from what his insights and researches led him to believe, Bricklin shows how James himself laid the groundwork for this more challenging view of existence. The non-reality of will, self, and time is consistent with James's psychology of volition, his epistemology of self, and his belief that Newtonian, objective, even-flowing time does not exist.

Synopsis Living Martyrs in Late Antiquity and Beyond by : Diane Shane Fruchtman
This book demonstrates that living martyrdom was an important spiritual aspiration in the late antique Latin west and argues that, consequently, attempts to define, study, or locate martyrdom must move away from conceptualizations that require or center on death. After an introduction that traces the persistence of "living martyrs" as real objects of spiritual devotion and emulation across the span of Christian history and discusses why such martyrs have been overlooked, the book focuses on three significant authors from the late ancient Latin west for whom martyrdom did not require death: the Spanish poet Prudentius (c. 348–413), the senator-turned-ascetic Paulinus of Nola (353–431), and the influential North African bishop Augustine of Hippo (354–430). Through historically and literarily contextualized close readings of their work, this book shows that each of these three authors attempted to create a new paradigm of martyrdom focused on living, rather than dying, for God. By focusing on these living martyrs, we are able to see more clearly the aspirations and agendas of those who promoted them as martyrs and how their martyrological discourse illuminates the variety of ways that martyrdom is and can be mobilized (in any era) to construct new, community-creating worldviews. Living Martyrs in Late Antiquity and Beyond is an important resource for historians of Christianity, scholars of religious studies, and anyone interested in exploring or understanding martyrological discourse.
