Synopsis The Government of the People, of the State of Ohio (Classic Reprint) by : George Wells Knight

Excerpt from The Government of the People, of the State of Ohio It is not the national government, but the State government, acting through its local agencies, to which the American looks for the protection of life and property, for the security of his home and family, and for the education of his children. To understand the workings of State and local government is, therefore, even more important than to know the details of the national government. Since, however, the beginnings of no two States have been the same, the governments of hardly any two are alike, and no general description of the American State, as a mere chapter in American civil government, exactly fits any actual State. It is the purpose of this book, accordingly, to present such an outline of the civic history and of the governmental machinery of the State of Ohio as will enable youth in the high schools, and the higher grades of the grammar and rural schools, to understand both what the government is, and how it came to be, and what the duties and responsibilities are of citizens of Ohio. It is not possible to note in this book all the variations in county, township, and municipal government and powers, due to special legislation. The general type has been carefully given, and the leading exceptions have been indicated. Each teacher should ascertain and call attention to the peculiarities, if any exist, in local organization in his county and township, village, or city. While a knowledge of the form and powers of the government is important, two things should be borne in mind in the teaching of civics: (1) that concrete examples of governmental work drawn from local observation and study are the best aids to an understanding of the use and operations of orderly government, and (2) that the knowledge of forms and powers is barren, except as it leads to a conception of the duty and responsibility of each citizen under those forms for the right exercise of the powers. Synopsis Ohio Early State and Local History (Classic Reprint) by : Daughters of the American Revolution

Excerpt from Ohio Early State and Local History Other papers review the early history and progress of our State, and the important part it has played in the history and development of our Nation. And since this volume has been prepared by a Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, it seems appropriate to include within it, not only the military services rendered our Nation by the Revolutionary ancestors of our Members, but also, in so far as possible, their authentic and traditional family history; and likewise, the lineage of our Members descended from such ancestors. Synopsis The Story of Ohio (Classic Reprint) by : Alexander Black

Excerpt from The Story of Ohio The beginnings of Ohio were the beginnings of the great Northwest. From it grew the majestic group of States now lying at the heart of the Republic. The famous ordinance of 1787, by which the Northwest Territory was established, and dedicated to freedom, and which is not extravagantly described as one of the three title deeds of American constitutional liberty, was first expounded and applied by the pioneers of Ohio, who guarded its honor with zealous patriotism, cherishing the covenant as a guarantee of political progress and moral success. Synopsis The Government of Ohio by : Wilbur H. Siebert

Excerpt from The Government of Ohio: Its History and Administration This book is intended to give in brief compass a comprehensive account of the government of the State of Ohio as it has developed to the present year - the hundredth anniversary of Ohio's admission to Statehood. The plan of treatment conforms in general to that laid down for all the volumes of the series to which this book belongs, but several features have been suggested by the excellent work of Professor W. C. Morey on The Government of New York, which also appears in this series. In accordance with this plan, the growth of the government during the fifteen years of its Territorial life and the hundred years of its life as a State has been treated in Part I (Chapters I and II); the structure of the government has been described in Part II (Chapters III, IV, V, and VI); and the work of the government has been set forth in Part III (Chapters VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII). It will be seen from this arrangement that an effort has been made to lay due stress on the functions of the State, a subject generally slighted despite the fact that these functions are an expression of the will of the people, are performed for the benefit of the people, and constitute the objects for which a modern government exists.
