Synopsis History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint) by : J. H. Merle D'aubigné

Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century, Vol. 4 When a foreigner visits certain countries, as England, Scotland, or America, he is sometimes presented with the rights of citizenship. Such has been the privilege of the "History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century." From 150,000 to 200,000 copies are in circulation, in the English language, in the countries I have just mentioned; while in France the number hardly exceeds 4000. This is a real adoption, - naturalizing my Work in the countries that have received it with so much favour. I accept this honour. Accordingly, while the former Volumes of my History were originally published in France; now that, after a lapse of five years, I think of issuing a continuation of it, I do so in Great Britain. This is not the only change in the mode of publication. I did not think it right to leave to translators, as in the case of the former Volumes, the task of expressing my ideas in English. The best translations are always faulty; and the Author alone can have the certainty of conveying his idea, his whole idea, and nothing but his idea. Synopsis History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century by : J. H. Merle d'Aubigne

Originally in five volumes this history of the Protestant Reformation still finds ready acceptance. As a popular work on the Reformation, it has had immense circulation in several languages. d’Aubigné’s description of the prominent events and personalities of the Reformation is marked by a lively style of writing, a certain picturesqueness, and powerful word painting. It captures the heartbeats of the Reformation. Characters such as Erasmus, Luther, Melanchthon, Farel, Calvin, Tetzel, and Eck sprint to life. Their personality traits and their roles in the drama of the Reformation are captured in lively detail.

Synopsis History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century (Classic Reprint) by : J. H. MERLE. D'AUBIGNE

Excerpt from History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century Almost a generation has passed away since the History of the Reformation was first published. W'hen the idea of writing it occurred to the author, he was young, and he felt strongly impelled to give a narrative of the wonderful works that God had wrought for Christendom in the Sixteenth Century. Aware of his own incapacity to accomplish the task, and fearing that, in undertaking it, he might. Be acting rashly, he at first only published a small edition. His fears were not realized; and the. Work met with success, such as he had never for a moment anticipated. He must thankfully ascribe the praise to the Lord, who, he humbly believes, has helped him.
