Synopsis History of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces by : Theodore W. Bauer

Before World War II the Army Industrial College, with its emphasis on the economic aspects of national security was a unique military college with no counterpart in other nations. World War II brought new recognition of the important role of the Industrial College. When the College was reconstituted as a joint-service institution after World War II, graduate level instruction was provided in economic mobilization, but emphasis soon shifted to the management of defense resources. The Industrial College of the Armed Forces was designated by its charter as an institution at the highest educational level in the Defense Establishment. The Alumni Association of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces undertook the preparation of this history to meet a long-recognized need for a comprehensive account of the development of the College. This project is especially timely in view of the 60-year anniversary of the Industrial College on 25 February 1984. The present study emphasizes changes in mission and the evolution of the instructional program. Extensive use was made of the annual reports submitted by the Commandants of the Industrial College to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Synopsis The Employment of Negro Troops by : Ulysses Lee

Ulysses Lee's The Employment of Negro Troops has been long and widely recognized as a standard work on the subject. Although revised and consolidated before publication, the study was written largely between 1947 and 1951. If the now much-cited title has an echo of an earlier period, that very echo testifies to the book's rather remarkable twofold achievement; that Lee wrote it when he did, well before the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, and that is reputation - for authority and objectivity - has endured so well. This is a landmark study in military and social history. As a key source for understanding the integration of the Army, Dr. Lee's work eminently deserves a continuing readership.

Synopsis Military Education by : Cynthia A. Watson

Professional Military Education (PME) is broader and more rigorous than is widely understood in the United States. Improving educational programs within the military service branches is at the very center of ongoing force transformation efforts and advanced educational opportunities occur at various, set levels of military experience. Military education increasingly conforms to standards imposed by outside civilian accrediting bodies and is mandated and monitored, to an extent, by Congress. Military Educationexplores this often-overlooked area of education within the context of the modern military force structure. In this unique work, Watson chronicles the evolution of professional military education during the last sixty years. Careful to draw distinctions between training and education, she briefly traces the history of PME and examines some of the major personalities involved in shaping it, as well as the evolution of the curriculum stressed in PME programs. Her narrative, combined with key documents, a glossary, and a timeline of important events, dispels popular notions of an uneducated military force.
