Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established to provide the opportunity for higher education to people of African descent in the era of segregation. The visions, values, and heritages these schools embodied enabled them to chart new frontiers of learning, scholarship, and public engagement for and beyond the United States. Historically Black Colleges and Universities in a Globalizing World: The Past, the Present, and the Future, edited by Alem Hailu, Mohamed S. Camara, and Sabella O. Abidde examines the history and contribution of these institutions in the broader national and global sociopolitical context of the changes taking place in the nation and the world. Collectively, the contributors offer reflections and visions by both looking back and forward to find viable answers to the challenges and opportunities HBCUs face in the new century and beyond. They argue that as the world convulses by the new global dynamics of emerging pandemics, economic dislocations, and resource constraints, HBCUs are uniquely positioned to meet these challenges.

This book examines the unique contribution of HBCUs, arguing that through their distinct public education, engagement, and activism, they have been at the forefront of leading global transformations. The book also argues that HBCUs can do more by paying more attention to the issue of enrollment, leadership, finances, and graduation standards.

One of the primary focuses of this Committee has been to make college more affordable and accessible, so that very qualified students have the opportunity to go to college. In addition to providing low and middle-income students with some much needed financial relief when paying for college, this new law also makes an historical investment of more than a half billion dollars in historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), Hispanic-serving institutions, and other minority-serving schools. HBCUs provide critical higher education opportunities for African-American, low-income, and educationally disadvantaged Americans. Historically, HBCUs have played an especially significant role in opening the doors of college to African-American students. During times of slavery and segregation, HBCUs were the only institutions that would admit African-American students. Today, these colleges and universities play an increasing role in helping students succeed in college and in strengthening our workforce. This book highlights the work that must be done to ensure that students at HBCUs and other minority serving schools have the same opportunities as students at other colleges. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

This book examines colleges and universities across the diaspora with majority African, African-American, and other Black designated student enrolments. It engages the diversity of Black colleges and universities and explains their critical role in promoting academic excellence in higher education.

Historically Black colleges and universities play a vital role in the education of African Americans in the United States. For nearly 150 years, these institutions have trained the leadership of the Black community, graduating the nation s African American teachers, doctors, lawyers, and scientists. This book explores the internationalization policy, programs, and initiatives at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. This book addresses the value and impact of internationalization for all students at HBCUs and beyond. Internationalization can be leveraged as a tool for social justice and diversity thus moving students who are often placed at the periphery of society to the center. It also highlights the tensions between internationalization and institutional policies and priorities, while still serving, who have been historically marginalized.
