Martín Lutero (1483-1546) desarrolló la faceta de polemista a lo largo de toda su vida. Su conocimiento exhaustivo y preciso de la Biblia y su lenguaje directo, agresivo e irrespetuoso, con frecuencia rayano en el insulto, lo convertían en un temible adversario. En El siervo albedrío (1525), obra de gran calado teológico que expone la doctrina de la justificación por la fe, la Reforma luterana se lanza en tromba contra el humanismo representado por Erasmo de Róterdam y su defensa del libre albedrío. Los otros dos escritos aquí reunidos, Sobre el papado de Roma (1520) y Contra Hanswurst (1541), son relevantes para entender el concepto de Iglesia que propugnaba Lutero.

La Reforma del siglo XVI es uno de los hechos claves en la historia moderna y el punto de partida de todas las iglesias cristianas evangélicas actuales etiquetadas popularmente como "protestantes". Dentro de la Reforma, su detonante y eje central tiene un nombre propio: Martín Lutero.
