Synopsis Elephant, Hippopotamus & Rabbit by : Zenzo Ncube
Having been born in Africa during an era when owning a picture book, let alone affording TV was a luxury, ‘Tug Of War’ was inspired by many of the African folk stories that were told to us by my grandmother. These stories were occasionally told during evenings, after meals and were extremely entertaining as well as educational in a way that made me visualize them. As a result, I have been motivated to share this experience pictorially in this book. It tells of three characters, Elephant, Hippopotamus and Rabbit. The story begins deep in the African jungle where the agile and witty Rabbit entertains himself by challenging Elephant and Hippopotamus to a game of tug of war. The little animal selects the competitors on two distinct characteristics. They live in completely different environments and possess similar strengths. Elephant naturally prefers the inner jungle and Hippopotamus spends most of his time in the water. This presents a perfect opportunity for a perfect match with Rabbit handing each end of the rope to each large animal at different times declaring that he can defeat either Elephant or Hippopotamus to this pull game. It actually ends with both huge animals fiercely competing against one another yet ignorantly believing that Rabbit is on the other end. This teaches us to acknowledge and respect each other and not to judge each other in terms of natural built or stature.

Synopsis Hippos Can Swim by : Pablo Bernasconi
Who ever heard of a hippo who didn't swim? Hippo's family all love to swim - but not him. He's afraid of the water. So he sets off to find himself some friends who don't like swimming either. He tries skipping rope with the rabbits, but he's too heavy to jump. He goes on the seesaw, but even seven monkeys aren't enough to lift him off the ground. He can't even climb trees. Eventually he decides to face his fears, and plunges into the lagoon... only to find that in his own element, he is as light as a bird. Hilarious, quirky illustrations bring to life this delightful story about taking the plunge.

Synopsis Rabbit's Snow Dance by : Joseph Bruchac
Rabbit’s Snow Dance Master storytellers Joseph and James Bruchac present a hip and funny take on an Iroquois folktale about the importance of patience, the seasons, and listening to your friends. Pair it with other stories about stubborn animals like Karma Wilson’s Bear Wants More and Verna Aardema’s Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. Rabbit loves the winter. He knows a dance, using an Iroquois drum and song, to make it snow—even in summertime! When rabbit decides that it should snow early, he starts his dance and the snow begins to fall. The other forest animals are not happy and ask him to stop, but Rabbit doesn’t listen. How much snow is too much, and will Rabbit know when to stop? The father-son duo behind How Chipmunk Got His Stripes, Raccoon’s Last Race, and Turtle’s Race with Beaver present their latest retelling of Native American folklore. “The telling is sprightly, and Newman's ink-and-watercolor artwork makes an ideal companion. An appealing addition to folktale shelves.” —Booklist “This modern retelling maintains [the Bruchacs’] solid reputation for keeping Native American tales fresh.” —School Library Journal “The picturesque language makes it a pleasure to read aloud.”—BCCB
