Synopsis The High Road of Song by : Hollis Dann

Excerpt from The High Road of Song: Book Two, Part Songs The sine qua non of school music is, Of course, s1ng1ng. Whatever else Of musm activities may have to be omitted, no child should miss the pleas ure, the stimulation, and the training provided by joining with his fellows in song. (from Programme of Studies, Department of Education for Ontario.) The High Road of Song, Book I I provides an abundance of two and three-part song material for class singing in Grades V to VIII, and for public performance. For several reasons it is best to defer extensive part singing until the pupil has formed safe vocal habits and is able to read and sing one-part music with comparative facility. NO normal child should be allowed, much less required, to sing the lower part exclusively, though all should learn to sing a second part. Children who are inexperienced in music will find difficulty in singing one part while listening to another. Part singing is an ear problem as well as a sight-singing one. Rounds are especially useful in developing the power to sing in the presence of an other melody. The round should be sung again and again as a unison song until the children are thoroughly familiar with it; then it may be attempted as a round. At the same time, short tone drills should be given'from dicta tion or from the blackboard. At all times children should be encouraged to sing easily, without forcing the voice. Synopsis The High Road by : Mark Herndon

What drives a man to spend 26 years performing night after night? To persevere through a stifling tour bus, bad food, strange women, flared tempers, a plane nearly blown from the sky? Just how did that troubled military brat with a dream claw his way from dirt-floor dive-bar shows to the world's biggest stages? Aviator, author, and Country Music Hall of Fame drummer Mark Herndon lived that dream with one of the most popular and celebrated bands of all time. He learned some hard lessons about people and life, the music industry, the accolades and awards, how easy it is to lose it all . . . and how hard it is to survive, to embrace sobriety, to live even one more day. Herndon's poignant memoir offers a tale at once cautionary and inspirational, delightful and heartbreaking, funny yet deeply personal. From innocence to rebellion to acceptance, can a man still flourish when the spotlight dims? Are true forgiveness, redemption, and serenity even possible when the powerful say everything you achieved somehow doesn't even count? That you're not who you and everyone who matters thought you were? Mark Herndon refuses to slow down. So look back, look ahead, and join him on the trip. He's taking The High Road.
