Synopsis Hiapo by : John Puhiatau Pule
Tapa, or barkcloth, is called 'hiapo' in the language of Niue island in central Polynesia. Most known pieces of hiapo were produced between 1850 and 1900. They are now dispersed, largely in museum collections, all over the world. The illustrations in this book, most of which are in full colour, bring together hiapo from all over the world. The authors have worked on the project for a decade, visiting museums, collecting information, travelling to Niue, talking to old people there, trying to find out how the paintings were done and who made them.

Synopsis Weavings by : Lydia Johnson
"For the first time, women's theological reflections from South Pacific nations have been gathered together in a published volume. This historic achievement represents the collective vision, will, energy, and commitment of women representing a broad cross-section of Pacific Islands ethnic and church communities. This work is not a publication merely for women, but it is a valuable ground-breaking contribution to the development of theology in Oceania and a gift to the churches of the Pacific and the worldwide church. It will be required reading the theological studentsm pastors, and laity across the region. The book has much to offer to the fields of women's and feminist theologies, contextual and non-western theologies, and to all in the worldwide church family who are open to hearing and learning from their sisters in this part of the world."--Back cover.

Synopsis Language and Communication by : Herbert L. Roitblat
The result of a conference on language and related cognitive processes in animals, this book brings together scientists working on language and communication, reviews research done on language in apes and dolphins, and places this work in a larger perspective of animal communication and cognition. The conference convened an international group of distinguished scientists interested in exploring the neurological, cognitive, social, and behavioral aspects of communication in animals. A broad spectrum of perspectives was represented, including naturalistic investigations of animals in their natural habitat as well as strictly controlled laboratory investigations. Similarly, a broad range of species was described including rats, parrots, monkeys, apes, dolphins, and humans. New methodologies and perspectives are continuously emerging that allow consideration of issues that previously could not be resolved. Emerging technology such as video equipment and advanced database systems allow one to exhaustively record in an accessible format the evidence on which scientific conclusions must be based. Investigation of animal language and communication is a small, but vigorously exciting area of scientific investigation as the chapters in this volume clearly attest.

Synopsis Polynesian Family System in Ka-U Hawaii by : E.S. Craighill Handy
This classic book on Hawaiian families and culture is an essential text for anyone interested in pre-American Hawaii. The Polynesian Family System in Ka-'U, Hawai'i is a collaboration of the distinguished scholars Dr. Mary Puku and Dr. E.S. Craighill Handy. It provides us with this fascinating review of traditional Hawaiian life. Manners and customs relating to birth, death, marriage, sexual practices, religious beliefs, and family relationship are all clearly described. The main sources of information were elderly Hawaiian informants of then remote Kacu district of the island of Hawaii. This Hawaiian history and culture book provides professional scholars and laymen a like with an unrivaled picture of traditional Hawaiian society. Based on original work in the field with living Hawaiians, it combines research into the literature by two authors of unusual qualifications with field work conducted under unique circumstances. This edition will be welcomed by librarians, anthropologists, and indeed all who have a serious interest in Polynesian life.
