Synopsis Hegel on the Modern World by : Ardis B. Collins
Hegel on the Modern World provides an excellent introduction to the rich and diverse cultural context in which Hegel develops his philosophy. It also makes available, in an easily accessible form, little known elements of the German scene that have a value of their own as well as a value for enriching our understanding of Hegel's philosophy. This book shows Hegel dealing with the world of seventeenth- and eighteenth- century Europe. It focuses on the otherness issue in various forms: the otherness between Hegel and other philosophical positions, the otherness of God and human persons, the otherness of philosophy and empirical science, of philosophical language and ordinary language, of reason and the irrationality of the French Revolution Terror. This book sheds new light on Hegel's treatment of the Enlightenment by settling the debate between reason and belief in a German rather than a French context. It raises questions about the limits of Hegel's systematizing by looking at the way Hegel's system is challenged by the thought of Pascal, by the French Revolution Terror, and by ordinary language. It looks at Hegel's engagement in a debate among chemists as a way of understanding how Hegel relates the philosophy of nature to empirical science. It examines in detail the difference between Hegel and Kant on such issues as subjectivity and objectivity apperception, empirical and transcendental ego, the form and matter of an object, and the status of the negative. It considers the similarity and difference between Hegel, Hobbes, and Kant on the scientific status of practical philosophy and the role of nature and natural rights in social life.

Synopsis Hegel and Contemporary Practical Philosophy by : James Gledhill
While Kantian constructivism has become one of the most influential and systematic schools of thought in analytic moral and political philosophy, Hegelian approaches to practical normativity hold out the promise of building upon Kantian insights into individual self-determination while avoiding their dualistic tendencies. James Gledhill and Sebastian Stein unite distinguished scholars of German idealism and contemporary Anglophone practical philosophy with rising stars in the field, to explore whether Hegelian idealist philosophy can offer the categories that analytic practical philosophy requires to overcome the contradictions that have so far plagued Kantian constructivism. The volume organizes the contributions into three parts. The first of these engages debates in metaethics regarding the relationship between realism and constructivism. The second part sees contributors draw on debates about the nature of political normativity, focusing primarily on the problems of historical contextualism, relativism, and critical reflection. The concluding part considers the application of the Hegelian framework to contemporary debates about specific ethical issues, including multiculturalism, democracy, and human rights. Hegel and Contemporary Practical Philosophy contributes to the on-going debate about the importance of systematic philosophy in the context of practical philosophy, engages with contemporary discussions about the shape of a rational social order, and gauges the timeliness of Hegelian philosophy. This book is a must read for scholars interested in Hegel and in the contemporary tradition of Kantian constructivism in moral and political philosophy.

Synopsis Hegel on the Proofs and Personhood of God by : Robert R. Williams
Hegel's analysis of his culture identifies nihilistic tendencies in modernity i.e., the death of God and end of philosophy. Philosophy and religion have both become hollowed out to such an extent that traditional disputes between faith and reason become impossible because neither any longer possesses any content about which there could be any dispute; this is nihilism. Hegel responds to this situation with a renewal of the ontological argument (Logic) and ontotheology, which takes the form of philosophical trinitarianism. Hegel on the Proofs and Personhood of God examines Hegel's recasting of the theological proofs as the elevation of spirit to God and defense of their content against the criticisms of Kant and Jacobi. It also considers the issue of divine personhood in the Logic and Philosophy of Religion. This issue reflects Hegel's antiformalism that seeks to win back determinate content for truth (Logic) and the concept of God. While the personhood of God was the issue that divided the Hegelian school into left-wing and right-wing factions, both sides fail as interpretations. The center Hegelian view is both virtually unknown, and the most faithful to Hegel's project. What ties the two parts of the book together--Hegel's philosophical trinitarianism or identity as unity in and through difference (Logic) and his theological trinitarianism, or incarnation, trinity, reconciliation, and community (Philosophy of Religion)--is Hegel's Logic of the Concept. Hegel's metaphysical view of personhood is identified with the singularity (Einzelheit) of the concept. This includes as its speculative nucleus the concept of the true infinite: the unity in difference of infinite/finite, thought and being, divine-human unity (incarnation and trinity), God as spirit in his community.
