Synopsis Hedonic Eating by : Dr Nicole Avena

Overeating and obesity are on the rise. Despite public health warnings, availability of diet books and programs, and the stigma associated with obesity, many people find it difficult to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. While there are many books on the topic of caloric or need-based eating, obesity and overeating can also result from eating that is not driven by hunger. Recent research found that excess food intake is largely driven by the palatability of food and the pleasure derived from eating. Hedonic Eating: How the Pleasure of Food Affects Our Brains and Behavior discusses the pleasurable aspects of food intake that may cause and perpetuate overconsumption. Broad in its scope, this book examines the various behavioral, biological, and social rewards of food. The comprehensive chapters cover topics ranging from the neurochemistry of food reward to the hotly debated concept of 'food addiction,' while providing relevant and up-to-date information from the current body of scientific literature regarding food reward.

Synopsis Food and Addiction by : Ashley N. Gearhardt

The food environment has changed dramatically and is now dominated by foods with unnaturally high levels of sugar, fat, and salt that are intensely rewarding. Scientific evidence has increased rapidly in the last few decades that these types of foods are capable of triggering addictive processes, which may be a key driver in the rising rates of obesity and diet-related disease around the globe. Food and Addiction: A Comprehensive Handbook, Second Edition provides a multidisciplinary review of the most cutting-edge science on the contribution of addictive processes to how we consume food. Top experts in the field of nutrition, addiction, psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, epidemiology, public health, marketing, and policy come together to provide a scoping view of this rapidly evolving scientific area that has important implications for the well-being and health of adults and children around the globe.

Synopsis Interdisciplinary Long-Term Treatment of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Patients by : Christine Stier

The lifelong care required for bariatric surgery patients often presents colleagues in the office with the situation of having to identify surgical and nutritive complications related to the previous surgery. This often requires very specialized knowledge not only of the surgical procedures themselves, but especially of the metabolic changes that follow surgery. Based on many years of experience in the leading surgical obesity centers in Germany, the editors have compiled this book. It offers practical guidance for the follow-up care of obesity patients who have undergone surgery. With practical relevance, the book supports general practitioners and internists in their competence to recognize and treat postoperative changes and complications. The diverse and complex physiological changes are explained as well as the necessary knowledge of surgical procedures. The topics of nutrition, deficiencies and supplementation after surgery, possible complications and intervention options are highlighted. Monitoring of pregnancy following bariatric surgical intervention also takes on special emphasis.

Synopsis Exercise and Sport Pharmacology by : Mark D. Mamrack

Exercise and Sport Pharmacology is an accessible book that will be useful for teaching upper-level undergraduates or entry-level graduate students about how drugs can affect exercise and as well as how exercise can affect the action of drugs. It leads students through the science-including the related pathology, exercise physiology, and drug action-to gain an understanding of these interactions. The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides the basics of exercise pharmacology, exercise physiology, and autonomic pharmacology; Part II presents chapters on the major cardiovascular and respiratory drug classes; Part III describes the frequently prescribed medications for such common conditions as diabetes, depression, pain, fever, inflammation, and obesity; and Part IV includes discussions of supplements and commonly used drugs such as caffeine, nicotine, cannabis, and performance-enhancing drugs. In Parts II through IV, the chapters include an overview of the pathology the drugs are designed to treat, how the drug works in the human body, the effect of exercise on how the body responds to a drug, and how exercise changes the fate of the drug in the body. Chapters also include information on the drug's possible health risks and whether taking the drug comes under scrutiny of sport-regulating agencies. Throughout, figures and tables help to illustrate and summarize content. Most chapters open with an on-going case example to apply and preview chapter content. In the text, boldface terms indicate for students which concepts can be found in the book's Glossary, for easy reference. Chapters conclude with a Key Concepts Review and Review Questions.

Synopsis The Goal Conflict Model of Eating Behavior by : Wolfgang Professor Stroebe

In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major practical theoretical contributions. In this volume: Overweight and obesity rates have increased dramatically in most industrialized countries, even though more and more people are chronically dieting. Dieters can manage to lose substantial amounts of weight while actively dieting, but most regain it within a few years. So why do most chronic dieters have such difficulty controlling their weight and why is there only a small minority of successful dieters? To address these questions, Stroebe developed the goal conflict model of eating behavior, a social cognitive theory that attributes the difficulty of chronic dieters to a conflict between two incompatible goals: eating enjoyment and weight control. Although chronic dieters are motivated to pursue their weight control goal, most fail in food-rich environments: Surrounded by palatable food cues that activate thoughts of eating enjoyment, incompatible weight control thoughts are inhibited and weight control intentions are "forgotten". For successful dieters - probably due to past success in exerting self-control - tasty high-calorie food has become associated with weight control thoughts. For them, exposure to palatable food makes weight control thoughts more accessible, enabling them to control their body weight in food-rich environments. This book contains the key articles of a research program by Stroebe and collaborators to assess the validity of this theory. They succeeded in tracing the processes that lead from temptation to a breakdown of dieting intentions. They also demonstrated that these theoretical principles can be used to develop effective weight loss interventions. The book should be of value for all researcgers, students and clinicians involved in obesity research and treatment.
