Synopsis Stripe Rust by : Xianming Chen
This book comprehensively introduces stripe rust disease, its development and its integral control. Covering the biology, genetics, genome, and functional genomics of the pathogen, it also discusses host and non-host resistance, their interactions and the epidemiology of the disease. It is intended for scientists, postgraduates and undergraduate studying stripe rust, plant pathology, crop breeding, crop protection and agricultural science, but is also a valuable reference book for consultants and administrators in agricultural businesses and education.

Synopsis Microbial Extracellular Polymeric Substances by : Jost Wingender
Microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are the key components for the aggregation of microorganisms in biofilms, flocs and sludge. They are composed of polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and other biological macromolecules. EPS provide a highly hydrated gel matrix in which microbial cells can establish stable synergistic consortia. Cohesion and adhesion as well as morphology, structure, biological function and other properties such as mechanical stability, diffusion, sorption and optical properties of microbial aggregates are determined by the EPS matrix. Also, the protection of biofilm organisms against biocides is attributed to the EPS. Their matrix allows phase separation in biofiltration and is also important for the degradation of particulate material which is of great importance for the self purification processes in surface waters and for waste water treatment.

Synopsis Oil Spill Response in the Marine Environment by : J.W. Doerffer
The rapid economic development of many countries since World War II has resulted in a considerable increase in the marine transport of raw materials, especially of crude oils, and in offshore activities. Inevitably, operational discharges from ships (ballast and bilge water), incidents such as collisions and groundings, and offshore exploration of oil and gas, lead to a significant amount of oil going into the sea. So far, understanding of marine environments, of oil and its behaviour when released onto the water surface, and of the methods and means of response to an oil spill, has been rather limited. This book introduces the reader to these problems and reflects the levels and trends of development in the field. The author has played an active role in combating marine pollution in the international arena since the 1970s and was awarded the International Maritime Prize for 1989 by the International Maritime Organisation.

Synopsis Intrinsic Bioremediation by : Robert E. Hinchee
An international group of researchers and engineers discuss using natural attenuation to degrade contaminants and thereby remediate soils and groundwater. This volume describes laboratory studies and field demonstrations in support of subsurface remediation at military, manufactured gas plant, landfill, petroleum spill, and other sites. The contaminants of concern include benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, and xylenes (BTEX); naphthalene; trichloroethene; trichlorethane; and perchloroethylene. Analytical methods for assessing the potential for natural attenuation (passive bioremediation) at a given site and for confirming and documenting efficacy are discussed.

Synopsis Wastewater Treatment Reactors by : Maulin P. Shah
Wastewater Treatment Reactors: Microbial Community Structure analyzes microbial community structure in relation to changes in physico-chemical parameters, the gene content (metagenome) or gene expression (metatranscriptome) of microbial communities in relation to changes in physico-chemical parameters, physiological aspects of microbial communities, enrichment cultures or pure cultures of key species in relation to changes in physico-chemical parameters, and modeling of potential consequences of changes in microbial community structure or function for higher trophic levels in a given habitat. As several studies have been carried out to understand bulking phenomena and the importance of environmental factors on sludge settling characteristics, which are thought to be strongly influenced by flocculation, sludge bulking, foaming and rising, this book is an ideal resource on the topics covered. Presents the state-of-the-art techniques and applications of omics tools in wastewater treatment reactors (WWTRs) Describes both theoretical and practical knowledge surrounding the fundamental roles of microorganisms in WWTRs Points out the reuse of treated wastewater through emerging technologies Covers the economics of wastewater treatment and the development of suitable alternatives in terms of performance and cost effectiveness Discusses cutting-edge molecular biological tools Gives in-depth knowledge to study microbial community structure and function in wastewater treatment reactors
