Synopsis Guide to the Solo Horn Repertoire by : Richard Seraphinoff
This comprehensive, annotated resource of solo repertoire for the horn documents in detail the rich catalogue of original solo compositions for the instrument. Intended as a guide for practical use and easy reference, it is organized into three large sections: works for unaccompanied horn, works for horn and keyboard, and works for horn and ensemble. Each entry includes publisher information, a brief description of the form and character of a work, technical details of the horn writing, and information on dedication and premiere. The authors also include commentary on the various techniques required and the performance challenges of each piece. Representing over ten years of careful compilation and notation by an expert in horn performance and pedagogy, and by a seasoned music librarian and natural horn performer, Guide to the Solo Horn Repertoire will be an invaluable resource for performers, educators, and composers.

Synopsis An Annotated Guide and Interactive Database for Solo Horn Repertoire by : Sarah Schouten
ABSTRACT: Given the horn's lengthy history, it is not surprising that many scholars have examined the evolution of the instrument from the natural horn to the modern horn and its expansive repertoire. Numerous dissertations, theses, and treatises illuminate specific elements of the horn's solo repertoire; however, no scholar has produced a comprehensive, annotated listing of these compositions. With solo repertoire representing a cornerstone of every horn student's musical education, this treatise aims to eliminate this void by evaluating and annotating one hundred of these works, and making them widely available through an online interactive database. Repertoire was individually reviewed and examined to include pieces of varying difficulty and styles in addition to the standard repertoire. The entries in this treatise include the composer's name and dates, the publication information of the examined piece, the range (in horn pitch), clef, techniques, duration, level of difficulty, the accompaniment available, and the difficulty of the piano accompaniment. A short descriptive paragraph highlights other key features of each composition. The goal of the listed information is to provide enough details about the piece so that the musician can decide if it meets his or her needs. In addition to the paper document, there is a searchable internet database component to this treatise. It serves as a quick reference tool for teachers, students, and horn enthusiasts. The internet database may be found at www.hornrep.org.

Synopsis A Guide to Solo Horn Music by : Arthur Diaz
This document provides a diverse list of appropriate solo horn repertoire with a formulaic approach to programming solo recitals; as a resource, it will provide horn players of all levels with more independence and more options when planning recitals. The formula will outline various formats for a recital, incorporating a system of categorizing the works based on guidelines that include length, style, movements, technical features, and the ensemble required. The categories provide consistent, measurable, and reliable guidelines which teachers, students, and performers can use to make informed decisions. An overview of important historical, stylistic, technical, and pedagogical information for each work will aid in repertoire choice and in performance, while information on how and where to obtain scores and recordings will facilitate the process. A table of works, organized by composer, is included for easy access to information.

Synopsis Horn Player's Audition Handbook by : Arthur LaBar
The Horn Player's Audition Handbook provides a handy, one-volume reference guide to the literature, especially for those players preparing for an imminent auditions, containing, as it does, the repertoire most frequently asked for by American orchestras. Since audition lists almost always include a few "non-standard" works, the well-versed student will also want to have employed the more comprehensive collections of excerpts in the course of his/her general preparation for an orchestral career. However, the advantages of having the most "important" audition material under one cover will readily be appreciated and makes this book a welcome addition to the literature.
