This manual for the identification of larval fishes of the Great Lakes basin with emphasis on the Lake Michigan drainage treats 24 families and 148 species. In addition to a key to the families, keys were constructed for selected species within some families. Species accounts include descriptions of adult ecology, reproductive biology, diagnostic characters and meristics. A description of the egg is given, as are morphometric, morphological and pigmentation characteristics of yolk-sac larvae, larvae and juveniles. Illustrations of yolk-sac larvae, larvae and juveniles have been included wherever possible and informative.

The stuff of nightmares in both their looks and the wounds inflicted on their victims, sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) are perhaps the deadliest invasive species to ever enter the Great Lakes. At the invasion’s apex in the mid-20th century, harvests of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), the lampreys’ preferred host fish in the Great Lakes, plummeted from peak annual catches of 15 million pounds to just a few hundred thousand pounds per year—a drop of 98% in only a few decades. Threatening the complete collapse of the fishery, the sea lamprey invasion triggered an environmental awakening in the region and prompted an international treaty that secured unprecedented cooperation across political boundaries to protect the Great Lakes. This publication synthesizes a roundtable held to review the state of knowledge of water quality impacts of aquaculture in the Great Lakes. The proceedings began with background talks on aquaculture in the Great Lakes Basin and its known & potential long-term environmental impacts, and the prevention or abatement of water quality impacts. This was followed by case studies of aquaculture experiences & lessons from Ontario, Michigan, Minnesota, and British Columbia. Recommendations are provided regarding monitoring strategies, research needs, reducing environmental impacts from aquaculture, and related matters. Appendices include extended abstracts of presentations.
