Synopsis God Without the Supernatural by : Peter Forrest

Peter Forrest expounds a program of best-explanation apologetics. He contends that since the existence of God would provide the best possible explanation of various facts, those facts support theism. Among the facts cited are the suitability of the universe for life, the regularity of the universe, the human capacity for intellectual progress, the experience of a moral order, and various forms of beauty. The beauty that interests Forrest as evidence for the existence of God includes sensuous beauty; the beauty of the natural order, as revealed by the sciences; and the beauty of necessity discovered by mathematicians. In addressing the need for an adequate motive for creation, Forrest conjectures that God created the universe for embodied persons not for their life on earth alone but also for an afterlife. Forrest acknowledges the speculative nature of such an account. He suggests that philosophical speculation is also required to defend theism against the charge that it is too extravagant a hypothesis to be warranted. Providing a speculative defense against the argument from evil, he explains how such speculations can be used to support best-explanation arguments without the conclusions themselves being rendered purely speculative.

Synopsis Einstein's God by : Todd Macalister

Albert Einstein's genius included a spiritual sense that fits comfortably with science. With quotes that illustrate Einstein's views, and with a look at how spiritual feelings may be understood and valued by modern science, this book shows a way of being spiritual that does not include belief in the supernatural. This book examines parallels between some modern views and long-standing systems of belief. It looks at ways of gaining from both the old and the new. But, it also identifies a choice that must be made. So, if traditional beliefs don't fit with what you see-if you see yourself as "spiritual, but not religious," if you attend services, but only partially believe, or if you think you're not really spiritual at all-take a look. You may find something you can say you do believe.

Synopsis The Unseen Realm by : Heiser, Michael S.

In The Unseen Realm, Dr. Michael Heiser examines the ancient context of Scripture, explaining how its supernatural worldview can help us grow in our understanding of God. He illuminates intriguing and amazing passages of the Bible that have been hiding in plain sight. You'll find yourself engaged in an enthusiastic pursuit of the truth, resulting in a new appreciation for God's Word. Why wasn't Eve surprised when the serpent spoke to her? How did descendants of the Nephilim survive the flood? Why did Jacob fuse Yahweh and his Angel together in his prayer? Who are the assembly of divine beings that God presides over? In what way do those beings participate in God's decisions? Why do Peter and Jude promote belief in imprisoned spirits? Why does Paul describe evil spirits in terms of geographical rulership? Who are the "glorious ones" that even angels dare not rebuke? After reading this book, you may never read your Bible the same way again. Endorsements "There is a world referred to in the Scripture that is quite unseen, but also quite present and active. Michael Heiser's The Unseen Realm seeks to unmask this world. Heiser shows how important it is to understand this world and appreciate how its contribution helps to make sense of Scripture. The book is clear and well done, treating many ideas and themes that often go unseen themselves. With this book, such themes will no longer be neglected, so read it and discover a new realm for reflection about what Scripture teaches." --Darrell L. Bock, Executive Director for Cultural Engagement, Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies, Howard G. Hendricks Center for Christian Leadership and Cultural Engagement "'How was it possible that I had never seen that before?' Dr. Heiser's survey of the complex reality of the supernatural world as the Scriptures portray it covers a subject that is strangely sidestepped. No one is going to agree with everything in his book, but the subject deserves careful study, and so does this book." --John Goldingay, David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament, School of Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary "This is a 'big' book in the best sense of the term. It is big in its scope and in its depth of analysis. Michael Heiser is a scholar who knows Scripture intimately in its ancient cultural context. All--scholars, clergy, and laypeople--who read this profound and accessible book will grow in their understanding of both the Old and New Testaments, particularly as their eyes are opened to the Bible's 'unseen world.'" --Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College

Synopsis Christianity Without God by : Lloyd Geering

Does the failure of the conventional idea of God spell the end of the Christian tradition? Or does it simply mean the end of conventional Christian doctrine? Christianity without God affirms the latter, treating Christian culture as a living and evolving stream. In this cogently argued book, Lloyd Geering brings the resources of his deep scholarship to look at what the world really needs from contemporary religion. His inspiration is the cultivation of the wisdom of Christianity, not a dependence on beliefs about a supernatural saviour.

Synopsis A Natural Proof for the Existence of God as Supernatural by : Ruud Schuurman

In this booklet, I will first argue that God is supernatural, and then prove that, given that God is supernatural, God exists. Of course, we normally assume that, just because God is supernatural, we cannot prove God's existence. But we can. In fact, we can prove the existence of God based on the very fact that God is supernatural. And we can do so by natural means (as opposed to supernatural means, e.g., divine revelation). This results in the most solid proof because it does not derive God's existence from natural phenomena (e.g., the cosmos) or from concepts of God (e.g., the greatest that can be conceived), but directly from the fact that God is supernatural. The classical arguments for the existence of God (i.e., cosmological, teleological, and ontological arguments) cannot do this. In fact, they cannot even accommodate a God that is supernatural. So, given that God is supernatural, they cannot really argue for God at all. In the process, I will also prove that, given that God is supernatural, there cannot be more than one God. And I will explain the beauty of God as supernatural: That only a supernatural God truly qualifies as God. That only a supernatural God is truly infinite, supreme, greater-than-the-greatest. That only a supernatural God is truly perfect, i.e., complete and flawless, and that, if we try to turn God into something more than just supernatural, we thereby actually reduce God, turn God into just another natural thing, the worship of which is indeed idolatry. Finally, I cannot but hope that this may help you to attain salvation, divine union, enlightenment, liberation, wisdom, or whatever you call that which sets you free. Free from sin and the consequences of sin, from separation, from craving and ignorance and the pain it causes, from the cycle of birth and death and its suffering, or, to put it in somewhat plainer terms, from the stress that comes from being deceived by appearances.

Synopsis Good Sense Without God: Or Freethoughts Opposed to Supernatural Ideas by : Baron D'holbach

A classic work against religion. Denying the existence of a deity, and refusing to admit as evidence all a priori arguments, d'Holbach saw the universe as nothing more than matter in motion, bound by inexorable natural laws of cause and effect. There is, he wrote "no necessity to have recourse to supernatural powers to account for the formation of things."
