Synopsis Selected Short Stories by : Rabindranath Tagore

Poet, novelist, painter and musician, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is the grand master of Bengali culture. Written during the 1890s, the stories in this selection brilliantly recreate vivid images of Bengali life and landscapes in their depiction of peasantry and gentry, casteism, corrupt officialdom and dehumanizing poverty. Yet Tagore is first and foremost India's supreme Romantic poet, and in these stories he can be seen reaching beyond mere documentary realism towards his own profoundly original vision.

Synopsis The Bengal Book by : Dola Mitra

In the vast sea of available knowledge on the topic that is 'Bengal', this book is a wave navigating its way through the depths. But the journey, necessarily, is a unique one. This story of Bengal glimpses into aspects of the charted routes of known history-political, social, economic, cultural-but is narrated through the prism of the author's own experiences. Familiar grounds are covered but conveyed through fresh perspectives, interpreted with original insights and infused with new views and voices-those of a gamut of experts including academics and actors, economists and environmentalists, sociologists and scholars, politicians and even psychologists. In telling and retelling bits and pieces of the life of Bengal, a plethora of gaps are plugged-chinks created by time and space-in the story. The author flashes the torchlight into these shadowy nooks and crannies and ferrets out what occurred and where it was difficult to assess what did actually go on. This book, in essence, is a factual, black and white account of selected parts of the history of Bengal, but splashed with the colour of creative storytelling.

Synopsis I Won't Let You Go by : Rabindranath Tagore

In this stunning collection of poems by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, acclaimed translator Ketaki Kushari Dyson brilliantly captures the energy and lyricism of the legendary poet’s verses. The title poem evokes the inner turmoil of a man who must return to the drudgery of work after visiting his home for the Durga Puja vacation. Haunted by his four-year-old daughter’s parting words, ‘I won’t let you go!’ he finds his anguish reflected in the vagaries of nature, with the earth echoing his pain. The other poems in this collection brim with Tagore’s compassionate humanity and delicate sensuousness. From detailing the nuances of intimate relationships to ruminating on the vast cosmos, these poems glow with a burning awareness of man’s place in the universe, reaffirming Tagore’s reputation as one of India’s greatest modern poets. In what a profound sadness are sky and earth immersed! The further I go, the more I hear the same piteous note: I wont let you go!
