Synopsis Get the Scoop on Animal Snot, Spit & Slime! by : Dawn Cusick
Learn amazingly icky facts, see the yucky photos, and gross out everyone you can! Welcome to a world filled with snot otters, puss caterpillars, spitting spiders, slime stars, snotties, and more! In Get the Scoop, you'll learn that snot, spit, and slime may seem gross, but there's a lot of amazing science in these icky fluids. Animals use them for communication, defense, to find food, to travel fast, and more. Jellyfish and corals produce "mucus nets" to capture prey. Parrotfish burp out a mucus blanket to sleep under every night, while sea stars and sponges release volumes of mucus to distract and discourage predators. Barracudas use mucus in their scales to increase their swimming speeds and protect them from parasites. Poison dart frogs release toxins with mucus. Hagfish secrete slime if another animal tries to eat them. Clams and mussels make "mucus strings" to bring food to their mouths. Hippopotamuses release "blood slime" that works as sunscreen and an antibiotic. Saliva helps animals in hundreds of ways, too. Anteaters and giraffes use sticky saliva to help them eat, while leeches, vampire bats, and ticks use chemicals in their saliva to help them feed on blood. Many mammals use saliva to help them recognize offspring and others spit saliva at predators and prey. The venom in shrews, snakes, and other reptiles comes from adapted salivary glands. Some animal saliva works like glue, helping swifts, termites, and wasps build nests.

Synopsis Chemical Cover by : Emma Carlson Berne
Many mammals, reptiles, fish, and amphibians produce chemicals in their bodies in order to ward off predators. Some manufacture poisons or smelly or painful substances in their own bodies. Others acquire these chemicals through their diet. Engaging text and eye-catching photographs invite readers to delve into the world of stinky sprays, poisonous skin, and slimy goo in order to understand how animals use these chemicals to defend themselves. A discussion of humans' relationship to chemical weapons helps deepen students' understanding of chemicals as defense, while fast facts and lively sidebars explore unusual venoms and behaviors.

Synopsis Believe It or Snot by : Nick Caruso
From the scientist duo behind the New York Times bestselling sensation Does It Fart? and their excremental follow up True or Poo?, Believe It Or Snot explores the myriad variety of slime in the animal and plant kingdoms. Your little brother isn't the only nose-picking animal. What is hyena butter and would it be appropriate to spread on toast? Why is giraffe saliva such a good lubricant? How does some mollusk mucus work like a fishing pole? And what's the deal with pygmy sperm whales' "anal syrup?" In Believe It or Snot, scientists and bestselling authors Nick Caruso and Dani Rabaiotti detail the slimy secrets of 80 organisms that ooze, drip, dribble, and splatter. Not quite a solid but firmer than a liquid, slime is used by plants and animals for defense, respiration, movement, feeding, communication, and even reproduction. Slime, you might say, is the glue that holds our world together. But that leaves an important question: which creature is earth's slimiest? In this book, the authors dive into the goo and come up with a definitive ranking of earth's slimiest creatures-while offering up a plethora of facts about the natural world's ooze, gunge, sludge, gunk, and goop.
