Synopsis Geosciences of Azerbaijan by : Akif A. Alizadeh

This book provides a review of Azerbaijan’s water reserves and main economic deposits (both hydrocarbon and hard) and describes the integrated application of geophysical methods (land, airborne, shipborne and satellite) for studying near-surface and environmental features and regional tectonic-geophysical zonation as well as the study of deep structures in the search for hydrocarbon and hard (polymetallic, copper, gold-bearing, iron-ore, magnetite, etc.) deposits. It particularly focuses on the geophysical examination of seismic activity in the region related to the interaction of the Afro-Arabian and Eurasian lithospheric plates. It is aimed at scientists, engineers and students interested in the commercial potential of Azerbaijan’s deposits and the application of different geophysical methodologies (gravity, magnetic, seismic, thermal, electric, electromagnetic, etc.) for analyzing mud volcanism, identifying subsurface structures (including the analysis of hydrogeological problems, the examination of past climates and archaeological inspection) revealing the deep tectono-structural peculiarities of the region under study, mining and oil & gas geophysics, development of 3D physical-geological models and advanced seismological prognosis.

Synopsis Geosciences of Azerbaijan by : Akif A. Alizadeh

This book provides a multi-scale and multidisciplinary perspective on the geology of Azerbaijan, a country characterized by a unique tectonic and geological setting including the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, the Talysh Mountains, and the Caspian and Kur Basins. Essential geological and geophysical data shed light on the principles of the evolution of the Earth within the region under study, seismic activity and the distribution of economic deposits. Further, special attention is paid to the history of geological-geophysical studies in the region. A combined, comprehensive interpretation of Azerbaijan’s near-surface and deep geological structure is achieved on the basis of an integrative analysis of stratigraphic, magmatic, morphological, lithological, tectonic, neotectonic, geophysical and other data, combining not only Russian and Azerbaijani-published, but also wholly new geological data. Volume I addresses the needs of researchers focused on geology and the environmental sciences, but will also be of interest to anyone looking to learn more about the natural phenomena in Azerbaijan, a beautiful country situated at the boundary between Europe and Asia.

Synopsis Building Knowledge for Geohazard Assessment and Management in the Caucasus and other Orogenic Regions by : Fabio Luca Bonali

This volume is aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of the state of art of research related to geo-related hazards in the Caucasus and other orogenic regions; it is also devoted to shedding light on a broad array of geological phenomena as well as discussing innovative tools and strategies for geohazard assessment. Additional emphasis is placed on preventive and mitigation measures, which might be helpful in tackling seismic, volcanic and landslide risks affecting major lifelines and infrastructures. The innovative, multidisciplinary methodologies illustrated in this volume may be successfully applied to other orogenic regions across the globe. The book features major scientific contributions from experts working on different Earth Science topics, such as seismology, structural geology, applied geology and volcanology. Its chapters describe a wide gamut of cutting-edge research methodologies and are thus intended to be read and shared by the worldwide Earth Science community. In particular, the readers will have a chance to gain a thorough knowledge of a number of key geological features that can be observed across both the Greater and Lesser Caucasus. Moreover, the volume provides a thorough description of the techniques employed to assess seismic hazard in major cities - such as microzonation - and an overview of the efforts taken to monitor and prevent seismic and landslide hazard posed to vital energy infrastructures in the Caucasus region.

Synopsis South Caspian to Central Iran Basins by : Marie-Franc̦oise Brunet

This book combines interdisciplinary research results using structural geology, geophysics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeontology, palaeomagnetism and subsidence modelling obtained through the MEBE (Middle East Basins Evolution) Programme and other groups in the South Caspian and Northern and Central Iran. A great part of the volume is devoted to Northern Iran (Alborz, Binalud and Koppeh Dagh belts), dealing mainly with the Late Palaeozoic and the Mesozoic Eras. Two papers present subsidence models of the South Caspian Basin since the Jurassic and three papers focus on Central Iran. The data and models in this compilation of papers present a detailed picture and a very comprehensive understanding of the Late Palaeozoic to Cenozoic evolution of the South Caspian and North Iran to Central Iran basins. Geodynamic evolution and sedimentation are mainly controlled by the closure of the Palaeo-Tethys due to collision of Eocimmerian blocks with south Laurasia, opening of the South Caspian Basin, and Neo-Tethys ocean closure associated with Arabia-Eurasia collision.

Synopsis Ethnobotany of the Caucasus by : Manuela Simioni

"The Caucasus MRW (online and print) Volume will cover this European Macroregion. The content will focus on the ethnobotany of wild plants in this Macroregion and it will be first developed as an online site and, later, when all of the planned topics have been covered for this specific volume, printed in a hard copy version. The online site will remain live and be available for updates (with new monographs [if not covered initially due to lack of research]). The content will be divided into sections covering countries (or groups of countries), based on plant diversity and not necessarily political or national boundaries. The Caucasus volume will have an Introduction (4,000-6,000 words); 50 200 plant monographs (10 to maximum 50 monographs per country) with each monograph having a length of ~1,500 words (with references), plus 2-4 photographs. To further define the content, the plant monographs will be divided into five major categories (food; medicine/cosmetic; veterinary; handicraft plants; and ritual/folkloric uses) and include notes. The number of the monographs in every category will be negotiated depending on the advances of the ethnobotanical research in each specific country, or group of countries. The main criteria for the inclusion of a given plant will be its cultural salience within a given country (assessed by the Volume Editor). References will be given at the end of the Introduction and each monograph..."--Publisher's website.
