Synopsis Geological Travels, Vol. 3 of 3 by : Jean André de Luc

Excerpt from Geological Travels, Vol. 3 of 3: Travels in England, Translated From the French Manuscript To be adduced; but among the geologists who asso ciate this excavating process with their several sys tems, none have undertaken to show that progress; they all content themselves with using the following general and specious argument, which, in particular, has been employed by Dr. Horns and Mr. Play rua. Whenever there have been rains for along continuance, we see the rivers and their various branches carry down earthy particles, which never return to the spots whence the waters, in their pas-b sage, have detached them consequently, during the course of a sufficient number of ages, (it is of no im portance what number, ) these streams may have hollowed out the rallies. This operation is necessary especially to the distinctive hypothesis of the Hut tonian theory, namely, that the materials carried of from existing continents are spread over the bottom of the sea, and there form mineral strata for succeed ing continents. But the excavation of vallies by running waters belongs also to other theories, whereof the distinctive hypothesis, though differing widely from each other, yet agree in requiring that the tim0 during which our continents have existed should be beyond calculation: it is therefore under this gene ral pointof view that I shall here consider the ques. Tion respecting the origin of bullies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Geological Travels, Vol. 2 of 3 by : Jean André de Luc

Excerpt from Geological Travels, Vol. 2 of 3: Travels in England, Translated From the French Manuscript In speaking 'he says of the natural epochas marked out by the phenomena of the mineral kingdom, we have supposed a greater simplicity, and separation of effects from one another, thah probably takes place in nature. We have, for instance, abstracted, in Speaking of the waste and degradation of the land, from that elevation which may have been carried on at the same time. T his appeared necessary to be done, in order to simplitsr as much as possible the view that was to be given of the Whole; but there can be no doubt, that, while the land has been gradually worn down by the Operations on its surface, it has been raised up by the expansive forces acting from below. There is even reason to think, that the elevatioiz has not been uniform, but has been subject to a kind of oscillation, insom'uch, that the continent's have both ascended and descended, or have had their level alternately raised and depressed, indefi pendentlyeof all action at the surface, and this within a period comparatively of no great extent.
