Synopsis A Text-Book of Physics (Classic Reprint) by : S. E. Coleman

Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physics The present tendency in physics teaching is to attach less importance to the formal and academic features of the subject, and to lay greater stress on the applications of physics in daily life. This change of front is in accord with the general movement in education which seeks to give the subjects of instruction a more useful content, drawn from the social and industrial life of the time. Judged by this standard, the kind of physics which views the util ities from afar or ignores them altogether is discredited. But a word of caution is clearly in order. A new truth is never the whole truth. The older physics had much to commend it, despite the caustic criticisms of zealous reformers; for the most practical thing in the world is the foundation of pure science upon which applied sci ence rests. T o eliminate or minimize the fundamentals while attempting to teach their applications is not to pro vide a royal road to learning, but a fool's highway to pretentious ignorance. Pure and applied Science are equally essential to a well rounded course. The one alone is barren; the other, when not well founded in the first, is superficial, disconnected, and trivial. Synopsis Principles of Physics, Designed for Use as a Textbook of General Physics (Classic Reprint) by : William Francis Magie

Excerpt from Principles of Physics, Designed for Use as a Textbook of General Physics When a man exerts his muscles in moving a body or in pushing or pulling a body which he cannot move, he is con scious of the exertion of force. In many cases, as when he bends a spring or sustains a weight, he interprets his sensa tion by saying, that the body against which he acts exerts a force in the opposite direction to the one which he is exerting and of equal magnitude. He further believes that the body, when in the same position or condition, is still exerting a force, even though he does not directly perceive the counter acting force. He thus feels willing to use bodies in certain conditions or positions as the means by which forces may be exerted. When a body is sustained in the air by the hand, the force exerted by the hand, as is shown by universal experience, is directed vertically upwards. The force which the body is assumed to exert in the opposite direction or vertically down wards, is called its weight. Universal experience has shown that the weight of a body depends on its size and on the material of which it is composed. If different bodies com posed of the same material and of equal volume are tested by A the hand, or.in any other way, it is found that their weights are equal. Two of these bodies will have the same weight as a body of the same material and of a volume double that of either one of them. By suitable. Combinations of equal weights, any one of which is selected as a unit, a scale of forces can be constructed. Synopsis Practical Physics by : N. Henry Black

Excerpt from Practical Physics: Fundamental Principles and Applications to Daily Life The World War has had many notable results, not the least important of which are: first, that it awakened a popular interest in and appreciation of physical and chemical science hitherto unmatched in the world's history; and second, that it led to an unparalleled concentration of able minds on practical or applied as distinguished from pure or theoretical physics and chemistry. There resulted many new applications of the fundamental principles of these sciences. Of these we have attempted to describe only such as seemed to us important in peace as well as in war; but even the few selected form an important addition to the domain of practical physics. We have doubtless included in this book more material than it is advisable for any class to undertake in a single year. This gives the teacher an opportunity to adapt his instruction to local needs and to the time available. We believe that it is most important to select Carefully just what material can best be used and to teach that thoroughly, rather than to try to touch upon many topics superficially. The present edition is as nearly like our former book in spirit, pedagogical method, and general content as the passage of nine years permits. In particular, we have tried to arrange the material in the most teachable order, to give clear and con cise summaries at the ends of the chapters, to set practical rather than artificial problems, to minimize the arithmetical drudgery involved in solving them, and to suggest many ques tions designed to get students into the habit of seeking useful information from the mechanics, artisans, engineers, and others whom they meet outside the classroom. Synopsis An Elementary Text-Book of Physics, Vol. 1 by : Robert Wallace Stewart

Excerpt from An Elementary Text-Book of Physics, Vol. 1: General Physics Which has commended the other volumes and made them popular with Students who are preparing for any of the usual Elementary Examinations on Physics. The presentation of the subject in separate volumes suited to the requirements of the Student was considered desirable, as it enabled the author to deal adequately with the fundamental facts and principles without the loss of' interest always manifest when the Whole subject is com pressed into one small volume. Synopsis A Text Book of Physics for the Use of Students of Science and Engineering, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by : John Duncan

Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physics for the Use of Students of Science and Engineering, Vol. 1 The preparation of this volume was undertaken to meet a demand that has been growing for some years past for a text-book of Physical Science which should connect more intimately than has hitherto been usual the scientific aspects of Physics with its modern practical applications. The reader must be left to judge how far the authors have succeeded in thus combining the outlooks of the man of science and the engineer. The contents have been selected to meet the requirements of various classes of students: those preparing for Intermediate and other examinations of London and other Universities; and those entering for appointments in the Army, Navy, and Civil Service, or offering themselves for examination in Electrical Engineering (grade I.) by the City and Guilds of London Institute. The book has been arranged in parts, in accordance with the divisions of the subject found convenient in most schools and colleges. Part I., Dynamics, comprises the sections of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics usually studied, and includes sections on motion, statics, and the properties of fluids. Part II., Heat; Part III., Light; Part IV., Sound; and Part V., Magnetism and Electricity; deal respectively with the principles of these subjects and their applications. Synopsis A Text-Book of General Physics for Colleges Mechanics and Heat (Classic Reprint) by : J. A. Culler

Excerpt from A Text-Book of General Physics for Colleges Mechanics and Heat Some changes 'have been made in the form of the usual college text and in the method of presentation. The aim of the writer has constantly been to say the words that would help the student to understand the subject. Thus it is hoped that the book will prove to be not only a treatise but also a text - book for students. Reference matter and tables are placed in the appendix instead of being scattered through the text. This takes less room and is much more convenient for reference. A number of short lists of problems are found where they are needed to illustrate the application of principles learned. Answers to problems are given at the end of the lists, but a student should be, made to understand that numerical results are not so impor tant here as his ability to present the line of argument involved in the problem. The tables of Sines, cosines, tangents, etc., are intended to make the book more desirable as a complete working text. We acknowledge our obligation to the Ball Engine Co.
