Synopsis Gender Through the Prism of Difference by : Maxine Baca Zinn
Gender Through the Prism of Difference adopts a global, transnational perspective on how race, class, and sexual diversity are central to the study of sex and gender. In contrast with other books in this area--which tend to focus on U.S. or European viewpoints--this wide-ranging anthology features many articles based on research done elsewhere throughout the world. Now in its fifth edition, the book opens with a revised and updated Introduction that sets the stage for understanding gender as a socially constructed experience. Featuring twenty-eight new readings, this edition covers compelling subjects like transgendered people, intersex issues, men and masculinity, sexual and gender violence, disabilities, obesity, reproductive technologies, educational testing, aging and ageism, and Occupy Wall Street.

Synopsis Through the Prism of Difference by : Maxine Baca Zinn
The editors have gone beyond simply assembling a collection of readings by the leading scholars of sex and gender; they introduce a new way to conceptualize the interrelationships between gender relations and other systems of inequality and difference. The editors invoke the image of a prism, through which different groups are seen not as distinct, but in "a continuous spectrum". The prism approach illustrates the varied ways that gender is constructed relationally, and thus experienced differently. Toward this end, the editors draw from the most recent studies of women and men -- especially studies of gender relations in the context of different sexual, racial/ethnic, social class, physical abilities, age, and national citizenship contexts. Though the majority of articles in the book focus on issues in U.S. gender relations, the editors have included numerous articles that focus on international and transnational factors. Together, the articles in this book shed critical, yet at times optimistic, light on the possibilities for change.

Synopsis The Invention of Women by : Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí
The "woman question", this book asserts, is a Western one, and not a proper lens for viewing African society. A work that rethinks gender as a Western contruction, The Invention of Women offers a new way of understanding both Yoruban and Western cultures. Oyewumi traces the misapplication of Western, body-oriented concepts of gender through the history of gender discourses in Yoruba studies. Her analysis shows the paradoxical nature of two fundamental assumptions of feminist theory: that gender is socially constructed in old Yoruba society, and that social organization was determined by relative age.

Synopsis Premodern History and Art through the Prism of Gender in East-Central Europe by : Daniela Rywiková
Premodern History and Art through the Prism of Gender in East-Central Europe is a representative collection of current Czech research in premodern history and art history, using gender as a tool of analysis. The common denominators of the texts collected in this volume are the art history of the premodern period, gender perspectives, and, to a certain degree, the Czech milieu. The book is divided into four parts, based on area of interest, time frame, and research perspective. The first part sheds light on the state of research in the field of women's history—along with the implementation of the concept of gender—and highlights a certain paradigmatic conservatism of Czech art historiography. The second gathers contributions that analyze visual sources of Czech origin. The third includes texts that analyze gender issues on the level of literary representation. The final part presents two case studies that involve analysis of the premodern West European source base. Rywiková and Malaníková present this volume as an innovative way to introduce this specific segment of Central European art history to a broader audience in global academia.

Synopsis The Kaleidoscope of Gender by : Catherine G. Valentine
The Kaleidoscope of Gender: Prisms, Patterns, and Possibilities provides an accessible, timely, and stimulating overview of the cutting-edge literature and theoretical frameworks in sociology and related fields in order to understand the social construction of gender. The kaleidoscope metaphor and its three themes—prisms, patterns, and possibilities—unify topic areas throughout the book. By focusing on the prisms through which gender is shaped, the patterns which gender takes, and the possibilities for social change, the reader gains a deeper understanding of ourselves and our relationships with others, both locally and globally. Editors Catherine Valentine, Mary Nell Trautner and the work of Joan Spade focus on the paradigms and approaches to gender studies that are constantly changing and evolving. The Sixth Edition includes incorporation of increased emphasis on global perspectives, updated contemporary social movements, such as #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo, and an updated focus on gendered violence.
