Synopsis Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Synopsis Gut Peptides by : John H. Walsh
Provides a comprehensive approach to gastrointestinal hormones, for clinicians and scientists who are interested in hormonal regulation of the gastrointestinal tract. The first section discusses general issues related to peptides as messengers, including receptors and signal transduction and control of gene expression. The second section presents the biochemical and physiological features of the gastrointestinal hormones and neuropeptides. The third section integrates these peptides into physiological and pathophysiological regulatory pathways of the gut. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Synopsis Pancreatic Disease by : Colin D. Johnson
Pancreatic Disease: Basic Science and Clinical Management summarises the state of the art in basic science and clinical management of pancreatic disease. This book provides a clear and up-to-date review of the advancing areas in clinical pancreatology and clinical research related to the pancreas. Written by leading experts in the field, this comprehensive review directs the interested reader towards important and current published source material. Covering all aspects of pancreatic disease, contributions are included from pancreatic surgeons and medical pancreatologists on pancreatic cancer, acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis. Special features include a systematic review of the evidence for the use of gemcitabine in pancreatic cancer prepared for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), the UK body charged with evaluating new drug treatment. Gemcitabine has FDA approval. There are several contributions dealing with the management of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours. This book will be useful to gastroenterologists, internists and surgeons, and specialist clinicians with an interest in pancreatic disease. Trainees in medical and surgical pancreatology will find it a companion to supplement standard textbooks.

Synopsis Recent Progress in Hormone Research by : Roy O. Greep
Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 31 covers the proceedings of the 1974 Laurentian Hormone Conference held in Mount Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, on August 25-30, 1974. The book discusses the relationship between catecholamines and other hormones; the hormone receptor complexes and their modulation of membrane function; and receptors for insulin, NSILA-s, and growth hormone. The text also describes the mechanism of action of pituitary growth hormone; hormonal regulation of ovalbumin synthesis in the chick oviduct; and studies on the hepatic glucocorticoid receptor and on the hormonal modulation of specific mRNA levels during enzyme induction. The endocrine neurons; the formation of estrogens by central neuroendocrine tissues; and the operating characteristics of the hypothalamic-pituitary system during the menstrual cycle and observations of biological action of somatostatin are also considered. The book further tackles somatostatin; the relationship of sleep and sleep stages to neuroendocrine secretion and biological rhythms in human; and the genetic approaches to the study of the regulation and actions of vasopressin. The identification and actions of gastric inhibitory polypeptide; the studies on the pathogenesis of Graves' ophthalmopathy, and qualitative and quantitative gonad-pituitary feedback is also looked into.
