Introduction to EEG- and Speech-Based Emotion Recognition Methods examines the background, methods, and utility of using electroencephalograms (EEGs) to detect and recognize different emotions. By incorporating these methods in brain-computer interface (BCI), we can achieve more natural, efficient communication between humans and computers. This book discusses how emotional states can be recognized in EEG images, and how this is useful for BCI applications. EEG and speech processing methods are explored, as are the technological basics of how to operate and record EEGs. Finally, the authors include information on EEG-based emotion recognition, classification, and a proposed EEG/speech fusion method for how to most accurately detect emotional states in EEG recordings. - Provides detailed insight on the science of emotion and the brain signals underlying this phenomenon - Examines emotions as a multimodal entity, utilizing a bimodal emotion recognition system of EEG and speech data - Details the implementation of techniques used for acquiring as well as analyzing EEG and speech signals for emotion recognition

Although the electroencephalogram - discovered more than a century ago - has been used for years as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, it is still poorly understood. In this book, John Barlow describes an ingenious new hypothesis for a comprehensive model of the EEG that is able to emulate a large variety of known EEG patterns with few variables. In contrast to previous hypotheses and models which have treated only selected EEG patterns (rhythmic activity such as alpha activity and sleep spindles seen largely as "filtered noise," or irregular activity, or certain types of epileptiform activity such as spikes) this approach, which is based on an oscillator with two separate input modulations of the extremes and the slopes of waves, covers all types of EEG patterns, and stems from specific features of the EEG itself rather than from arbitrary signals.Barlow describes the hypothesis in detail, then tests predictions for normal and abnormal EEGs with the aid of a hardware model and with specially developed methods of analysis. The hypothesis is further evaluated in the light of extensive reviews of other EEG models and methods of analysis and of the underlying anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of cerebral electrical activity. A technological section details the hardware model and the methodology for testing the hypothesis. Appendixes present some new approaches to traditional methods of EEG analysis and artifact minimization, areas in which Barlow has achieved international recognition.John S. Barlow, M.D., is a Neurophysiologist in the Neurology Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, Senior Research Associate in Neurology (Neurophysiology) at Harvard Medical School, and a Research Affiliate in the Research Laboratory of Electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This book contains the best papers of the International Conference on Advances in Power Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, PEIE 2010, organized by the Association of Computer Electronics and Electrical Engineers (ACEEE), during September 7–9, 2010 in Kochi, Kerala, India. PEIE is an international conference integrating two major areas of electrical en- neering – power electronics and instrumentation. Thus this conference reflects a c- tinuing effort to increase the dissemination of recent research results among prof- sionals who work in the areas of power electronics, instrumentation and electrical engineering The program of this joint conference included several outstanding keynote lectures presented by internationally renowned distinguished researchers who are experts in the various PEIE areas. Their keynote speeches have contributed to heightening the ov- all quality of the program and significance of the theme of the conference. I hope that you will find this collection of the best PEIE 2010 papers an excellent source of inspiration as well as a helpful reference for research in the aforementioned areas. Organizing a conference like this one is not possible without the assistance and continuous support of many people and institutions. I thank Stefan Goeller, Janahanlal Stephen, R Vijay Kumar, and Nessy Thankachan for their constant support and gu- ance. I would like to express my gratitude to Springer’s LNCS-CCIS editorial team, especially Leonie Kunz, for producing such a wonderful proceedings book.
