Leiberg began the field work in this reserve in the early part of June, 1901, and by December 1 had examined thirty-seven townships in the northern portion and five and one-half townships in the southwestern portion. During the winter of 1901 - 2 Mr. Leiberg prepared a full detailed preliminary report on these areas, which are outlined on the key diagram on pi. I. North of the Yosemite National Park lies the Stanislaus forest reserve, covering acres. The Lake Taboo forest reserve, of acres, is the only reserve drained by the Sacramento. The highest summits of the Sierras are in the reserves. 85% of the reserves are timbered and 15% are covered with snow or gla ciers. 70% of the 85% have, however, suffered from fire.
