Synopsis Guidelines for the Design of Footbridges by : fib Fédération internationale du béton

The intention of fib Bulletin 32 is to present guidelines for the design of footbridges as well as bridges accommodating cyclists and bridleways (equestrian paths). The need for these guidelines comes from the fact that structural engineers designing footbridges currently have to spend considerable time and energy collecting information from numerous documents, codes and recommendations to make design decisions. There seems to be no international document dedicated solely to the design of footbridges. These guidelines attempt to provide a concentrated source of information regarding all design issues specific to footbridges. It is meant to be a 'liberal' document in the sense that it promotes new, innovative and bold yet prudent designs by sharing the experience of the authors, summarizing specifications given in codes, and presenting a collection of examples of well-designed structures or structural details from around the world. It is not intended to be an international code that specifies limits and admissible values, thus encouraging timid, conservative designs that are repetitions of approved and tested designs. Indeed, it may be the very fact that no international code exists specifically for footbridges that encourages the wide variety of footbridge designs found today. It should be noted that numerous guidelines, codes and books have been published on bridge design in general. Information given in those publications that is also applicable to footbridges is not repeated in Bulletin 32. The chapters of these guidelines all follow the same pattern: an introduction to the subject, general guidelines as well as do's and don'ts; a summary of information found in existing international codes, recommendations, experience of the authors, and built examples with comparison and comments on this information; examples. Plenty of illustrations and photographs help to visualize the themes of this work. The last chapter, 'Case Studies', contains footbridges each with a short summary of main structural data and references for further reading.

Synopsis The World of Footbridges by : Klaus Idelberger

Structural engineers are often more interested in spectacular road and rail bridges with enormous spans than in relatively narrow footbridges built for modest loads. Local authorities, on the other hand, see pedestrian and cycle bridges in inner-city or rural locations as vital connections and important features of the town or landscape. Designs are often selected on the basis of architectural competitions. As there are no official guidelines for the planning of footbridges, the building techniques and performance of existing bridges are an important source of information and inspiration for structural engineers, architects and city or rural planners. This book contains 85 examples of footbridges built worldwide over the past three decades and includes open pedestrian and cycle bridges, utility bridges and skywalks in many different environments. The collection is arranged according to load bearing system and span length. There is a brief description of the location and structural system of each bridge illustrated by photographs, plans, elevations and in some cases construction details. It is a treasure trove for bridge builders.

Synopsis Structures and Architecture by : Paulo J. Cruz

Although the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering have both experienced their own historical development, their interaction has resulted in many fascinating and delightful structures. To take this interaction to a higher level, there is a need to stimulate the inventive and creative design of architectural structures and to persua

Synopsis Maintenance, Safety, Risk, Management and Life-Cycle Performance of Bridges by : Nigel Powers

Maintenance, Safety, Risk, Management and Life-Cycle Performance of Bridges contains lectures and papers presented at the Ninth International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management (IABMAS 2018), held in Melbourne, Australia, 9-13 July 2018. This volume consists of a book of extended abstracts and a USB card containing the full papers of 393 contributions presented at IABMAS 2018, including the T.Y. Lin Lecture, 10 Keynote Lectures, and 382 technical papers from 40 countries. The contributions presented at IABMAS 2018 deal with the state of the art as well as emerging concepts and innovative applications related to the main aspects of bridge maintenance, safety, risk, management and life-cycle performance. Major topics include: new design methods, bridge codes, heavy vehicle and load models, bridge management systems, prediction of future traffic models, service life prediction, residual service life, sustainability and life-cycle assessments, maintenance strategies, bridge diagnostics, health monitoring, non-destructive testing, field testing, safety and serviceability, assessment and evaluation, damage identification, deterioration modelling, repair and retrofitting strategies, bridge reliability, fatigue and corrosion, extreme loads, advanced experimental simulations, and advanced computer simulations, among others. This volume provides both an up-to-date overview of the field of bridge engineering and significant contributions to the process of more rational decision-making on bridge maintenance, safety, risk, management and life-cycle performance of bridges for the purpose of enhancing the welfare of society. The Editors hope that these Proceedings will serve as a valuable reference to all concerned with bridge structure and infrastructure systems, including students, researchers and engineers from all areas of bridge engineering.
