Synopsis Flora of Arequipa, Peru by : Edgar Heim
This field guide illustrates and describes ca. 20% of the recorded 1’160 vascular plants of the department of Arequipa in Southern Peru. It aims to be a comprehensive field guide for tourists and locals. The first part of the book describes the vegetation of Arequipa. It gives an overview of the harsh conditions of south-peruvian ecosystems. Bone-dry deserts and high mountains with extreme temperature fluctuations challenges plant growth. Such ecosystmes demand adaptation by the inhabitants, especially by the plants, which can not escape their habitat. The second part of the book is dedicated to the plant species of the departement of Arequipa. With the illustrations and the description in this book, the reader should be able to recognize the plants in their habitat. Additionally it provides information about the use and the ecology of the described species.

Synopsis An Annotated Checklist to Vascular Flora of the Ica Region, Peru by : Oliver Q. Whaley
"The ephemeral and fragmented nature of plant communities in the desert region of Ica, Peru have contributed to the poor documentation of its flora. This study provides the first comprehensive checklist and analysis of the vascular plants and habitats of the region, based on over 1800 herbarium collections, site-specific vegetation surveys and monitoring (2001–2017). Here, we report 501 taxa belonging to 283 genera in 68 families, with an outstanding number of taxa (297) representing new records for the region; over 10% of the flora (52 taxa) is categorised as threatened (CR, EN, VU). Asteraceae is the largest family in the checklist, followed by Poaceae, Fabaceae and Solanaceae. Key words: Agrobiodiversity, cacti, desert flora, dry forest, el Niño, fog ecosystem, grasses, habitat restoration, huarango, hyperaridity, Tillandsia."--Page 3.

Synopsis Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names by : Urs Eggli
Names are important elements to handle the diversity of items in daily life - persons, objects, animals, plants, etc. Without such names, it would be difficult to attach information to such items and to communicate information about them, and names are usually used without giving them much thought. This is not different for plants. When dealing with plants, however, it soon becomes apparent that the situation is somewhat more complex. Botanists use Latin names to bring order into the vast diversity, while everyday usage resorts to vemacular or "popular" names. As practical as these vernacular names are (it is not suggested that you should ask your greengrocer for a kilo gram of Solanum tuberosum or Musa paradisiaca subsp. sapientum), their most important draw back is the fact that they vary widely, not only from one language to another but also from coun try to country, even from region to region within a large country. More importantly, vemacular names in any given language are usually only available for the plants growing locally, or for plants of some special importance, such as crops and vegetables, medicinal plants, or important garden plants. For all other plants, the Latin names used by botanists and other scientists have to be employed. Such names often appear complicated or even awkward to the ears of those not accustomed to them.
