Synopsis FLOCSETL by : K. Krishnappan

"A computer model called FLOCSETL capable of predicting the settling characteristics of fine grained sediment in water columns is described in this manual. The model considers the flocculation process explicitly and hence is capable of making realistic predictions of fine sediment settling. The details of the model, including the mathematical basis, programme structure, input data requirements and a practical application are outlined in this report so as to make it a self contained user guide for the model"--Abstract.

Synopsis Size Distribution and Transport of Suspended Particles, Athabasca River, February and September, 1993 by : B. G. Krishnappan

This study characterizes the size distribution and transport processes of suspended particles in the Athabasca River below the pulp mill outfall at Hinton, Alberta. The project consisted of two field surveys in winter and fall 1993, measuring the flow field, size distribution of in-situ and dispersed particles, and concentration of particles in the water column over a reach extending from a point 8 kilometers upstream from Hinton to a point 175 kilometers downstream. The data from the two surveys show the effects of the pulp mill effluent on the physical transport characteristics of the ambient sediment. The results indicate the need for an improved sediment transport model.

Synopsis Flocculation in Natural and Engineered Environmental Systems by : Steven N. Liss

While new developments in genomics, nanotechnology, sampling, and modelling permit increasingly revealing investigation into flocculation structure and processes, there is still a fundamental lack of knowledge related to many aspects of this phenomenon. Presented by a prominent team of international experts, this text takes a unique perspective and melds together the natural and engineering fields of science as they relate to this central phenomenon. In doing so, the authors present the full range of sampling, handling, analytical, and interpretive options for operational management of natural or engineered system, providing comprehensive coverage that meets the needs of researchers, practitioners and students.

Synopsis Enhancing Urban Environment by Environmental Upgrading and Restoration by : Daniel Sztruhar

As urban areas keep growing, water infrastructure ages, and the requirements on environmental protection become more rigorous, there is a continual need for upgrading water pollution control facilities and restoring degraded urban waters. Such issues are addressed in this book by focusing on five major topics: (a) Upgrading stormwater management facilities, (b) Retrofitting / upgrading combined sewer overflow (CSO) facilities, (c) Optimising/upgrading sewage treatment plant performance, (d) Urban stream restoration, and (e) Challenges in restoring urban environment. Each chapter contains some overview papers followed by research or case study papers. Besides presentations of new approaches and accomplishments in the field of upgrading and restoration, several papers provide analysis of vast needs in this field in several countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which either recently joined the European Union (EU) or are preparing for accession, and need to comply with the existing EU directives dealing with environmental protection. As such, this book will be of primary interest to researchers and university lecturers dealing with environmental upgrading and restoration, environmental planners from all levels of government, municipal engineers and politicians, and finally the private industry representatives (consultants, private utilities and environmental technology suppliers) searching for new business opportunities among the new or aspiring members of EU.

Synopsis Fluvial Hydraulics by : Walter H. Graf

Written by an expert with thirty years experience in the field, this is a concise review of the hydrodynamic concepts andcalculation procedures, upon which fluvial hydraulics isbuilt. The first part is devoted to steady uniform and non-uniform as wellas unsteady flow in open channels. The second part deals withtransport phenomena, including sediment transport and local scour, turbidity currents and mixing processes in open channels. The volume is divided into nine chapters of unequal length whichare autonomous and self-contained. The subject matter presented ineach chapter is usually followed by a number of solved exercises, accompanied by a detailed discussion of the solution procedure.Unsolved problems are given at the end of each chapter. The book is written in a user-friendly style and has a doublevocation. It will readily serve as a textbook for undergraduateand/or graduate students as well as a handbook for theprofessionals dealing with problems in environmental, waterresources, civil, hydraulic and agricultural engineering, and ingeomorphology and geology.
