Synopsis Flick the Little Fire Engine by : James Lawrence

It's hard to believe, but this iconic children's story has never been published as a book - until now. Flick wants to fight fires more than anything in the world. But the grown-up engines say he isn't big enough or strong enough to help. Poor Flick - he always gets left behind at the station. Will he ever be allowed to help? From author James Lawrence: Flick the Little Fire Engine was originally written for broadcasting by Robert (Bert) Reisfeld. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1906, he lived a large part of his working life in Los Angeles and wrote music scores for Hollywood films and musicals. He died in Badenweiler Germany in 1991. Flick was recorded in Hollywood in 1948 on the MGM label on a double 78 RPM album and later on 45 rpm. Just over 3 years ago I told, my then 3- year-old daughter, the story of Flick by rote. She loved it so much I made up other stories about Flick's adventures. I then decided to locate the book only to find it didn't exist. It was clear to me a book had to be made.

Synopsis Heart of Brass by : Kate Cross

Arden is an undercover agent for one of the most powerful organizations of this steam powered world—the Wardens of the Realm—a group with extraordinary abilities, dedicated to protecting England against evil. Arden Grey enjoys a life most women in 1898 London can’t even dream of: She has the social status, wealth, and independence of a countess. She also has the ability to witness the final moments of a murder victim’s life. But ever since the disappearance of her husband, Lucas, none of this means anything to her. Until one night, when Arden spies a man watching her—a man she recognizes as her missing husband. He’s been ordered to assassinate Arden as retribution for her part in the killing of a Company agent. Luke remembers nothing of his life before the Company, a corrupt agency that has erased his memory. Even so, he can't seem to complete his assignment. There is something familiar about his lovely target, something that attracts him, and fills him with dread. For he knows that if he doesn’t kill her, someone else will—and kill him as well.

Synopsis There's a Song for Everything by : Maria Lissa Borce

It seems that there is not enough singing in pre-school these days, while we as educators get caught up with the demands of preparing children for formal schooling. Young children love to sing and move. They respond to repetitive rhymes and action. The songs in this book are a great resource to compliment their learning across all the curriculum areas. This song book will bring out the natural singer in every early childhood teacher, student and parent. When I teach children a new lesson, a young child will ask me “is there a song about...?” My answer is “yes,” because there can be a song about anything and everything, and if you are still searching for those songs, this book offers many possibilities.

Synopsis Garbage Land by : Elizabeth Royte

Out of sight, out of mind ... Into our trash cans go dead batteries, dirty diapers, bygone burritos, broken toys, tattered socks, eight-track cassettes, scratched CDs, banana peels.... But where do these things go next? In a country that consumes and then casts off more and more, what actually happens to the things we throw away? In Garbage Land, acclaimed science writer Elizabeth Royte leads us on the wild adventure that begins once our trash hits the bottom of the can. Along the way, we meet an odor chemist who explains why trash smells so bad; garbage fairies and recycling gurus; neighbors of massive waste dumps; CEOs making fortunes by encouraging waste or encouraging recycling-often both at the same time; scientists trying to revive our most polluted places; fertilizer fanatics and adventurers who kayak amid sewage; paper people, steel people, aluminum people, plastic people, and even a guy who swears by recycling human waste. With a wink and a nod and a tightly clasped nose, Royte takes us on a bizarre cultural tour through slime, stench, and heat-in other words, through the back end of our ever-more supersized lifestyles. By showing us what happens to the things we've "disposed of," Royte reminds us that our decisions about consumption and waste have a very real impact-and that unless we undertake radical change, the garbage we create will always be with us: in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we consume. Radiantly written and boldly reported, Garbage Land is a brilliant exploration into the soiled heart of the American trash can.
