Synopsis Pillars of Prosperity by : Timothy Besley

How nations can promote peace, prosperity, and stability through cohesive political institutions "Little else is required to carry a state to the highest degree of opulence from the lowest barbarism, but peace, easy taxes, and a tolerable administration of justice; all the rest being brought about by the natural course of things." So wrote Adam Smith a quarter of a millennium ago. Using the tools of modern political economics and combining economic theory with a bird's-eye view of the data, this book reinterprets Smith's pillars of prosperity to explain the existence of development clusters—places that tend to combine effective state institutions, the absence of political violence, and high per-capita incomes. To achieve peace, the authors stress the avoidance of repressive government and civil conflict. Easy taxes, they argue, refers not to low taxes, but a tax system with widespread compliance that collects taxes at a reasonable cost from a broad base, like income. And a tolerable administration of justice is about legal infrastructure that can support the enforcement of contracts and property rights in line with the rule of law. The authors show that countries tend to enjoy all three pillars of prosperity when they have evolved cohesive political institutions that promote common interests, guaranteeing the provision of public goods. In line with much historical research, international conflict has also been an important force behind effective states by fostering common interests. The absence of common interests and/or cohesive political institutions can explain the existence of very different development clusters in fragile states that are plagued by poverty, violence, and weak state capacity.

Synopsis Eight Pillars of Prosperity by : James Allen

In Eight Pillars of Prosperity, James Allen -- considered a founding father of the self-help genre -- expounds the importance of his "eight pillars of prosperity," namely, (1) energy, (2) economy, (3) integrity, (4) system, (5) sympathy, (6) sincerity, (7) impartiality, and (8) self-reliance. Within these are certain elements that further contribute to a life well-lived: promptitude, vigilance, industry, earnestness, moderation, efficiency, resourcefulness, originality, honesty, fearlessness, purposefulness, invincibility, readiness, accuracy, utility, comprehensiveness, kindness, generosity, gentleness, insight, simplicity, attractiveness, penetration, power, justice, patience, calmness, wisdom, decision, steadfastness, dignity, and independence. Allen's wisdom has a certain gravitas and is all the more inspiring given his challenging and inspiring life story. Born in England in 1864, Allen had to begin working at the age of fifteen after his father was murdered while seeking work in America. Allen thus worked for nine years as a factory knitter, then secretary. Pair this with Allen's other timeless classics such as As A Man Thinketh.

Synopsis The Eight pillars of prosperity by : James Allen

It is popularly supposed that a greater prosperity for individuals or nations can only come through a political and social reconstruction. This cannot be true apart from the practice of the moral virtues in the individuals that comprise a nation. Better laws and social conditions will always follow a higher realization of morality among the individuals of a community, but no legal enactment can give prosperity to, nay it cannot prevent the ruin of, a man or a nation that has become lax and decadent in the pursuit and practice of virtue. The moral virtues are the foundation and support of prosperity as they are the soul of greatness. They endure forever, and all the works of man which endure are built upon them. Without them there is neither strength, stability, nor substantial reality, but only ephemeral dreams. To find moral principles is to have found prosperity, greatness, truth, and is therefore to be strong, valiant, joyful and free.

Synopsis Up from Nothing by : John Hope Bryant

American opportunity is not dead. Bestselling author and entrepreneur John Hope Bryant outlines the mindset and practices that will allow us to achieve the American Dream, no matter what our current circumstances are. Facing a challenging economy, too many Americans despair of improving their lives. But John Hope Bryant insists that America is still the Land of Opportunity. Up from Nothing revives the forgotten story of the American Dream. It's about our beginnings as a nation of go-getters who believed they were winners before they won. Using the inspiring story of his own rise from humble beginnings, and that of his parents and grandparents, Bryant shows how individually we can change our mindset from survivor to thriver to winner and move beyond just getting by or being financially independent to becoming wildly successful. Collectively, we need to become a nation of winners once again. By ensuring that every stakeholder in America has access to the Five Pillars of Success—massive education, financial literacy, strong family structure, self-esteem, and supportive role models—Bryant shows how we can fulfill the promise of America's greatness. But to do so, we must turn away from distractions—such as political in-fighting or racial and class divisions—and focus on what we can control. This is not a book of tips on how to get a better job or make more money. It's about adopting a new way of thinking that will do all that for us and more. Up from Nothing is the new (old) business plan to keep us winning as a country.

Synopsis The Four Pillars of Prosperity by : Robet Wayne Atkins

Long-term economic prosperity cannot be achieved unless it is built on a solid foundation. That solid foundation consists of four pillars: governments, businesses, religions, and banks. Each pillar is a key element in the prosperity of a nation and this includes its government, its businesses, it religions, its banks, and ultimately its citizens. When one or more of the pillars is missing or is unnecessarily restricted then that nation will not experience long-term financial prosperity.
