Synopsis Five Middle English Arthurian Romances by : Valerie Krishna
The poems in this collection will give the reader an appreciation of both the distinctiveness and the variety of the medieval English Arthurian tradition and highlight some of this important chapter in Arthurian legend literature. The Middle English stories are different in style and structure to the later French romances, composed in poetic forms that derive from native English traditions. The Stanzaic Morte Arthur is the earliest version of the Lancelot-Guinevere story in English; The Awyntas off Arthure at the Terne Wathelyn is a serious moral poem while the story of the Avowing is a tail-rhyme romance. The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell is a strongly folkloric variation of Chaucer’s Wife of Bath’s Tale and Syre Gawene and the Carle of Carlyle is an alternative version of the testing of Gawain. Originally published in 1991, the translator gives an introduction to each poem as well as a general introduction about the development of the Arthurian poetic tradition.

Synopsis Nine Medieval Romances of Magic by : Marijane Osborn
In this book, Marijane Osborn translates into modern English nine lively medieval verse romances, in a form that both reflects the original and makes the romances inviting to a modern audience. All nine tales contain elements of magic: shapeshifters, powerful fairies, trees that are portals to another world, and enchanted clothing and armor. Many of the tales also feature powerful women characters, while others include representations of “Saracens.” The tales address issues of enduring interest and concern, and also address sexuality, agency, and identity formation in unexpected ways.

Synopsis The Medieval Romance of Alexander by : Jean Wauquelin
The figure of Alexander the Great haunted the medieval imagination - as much as Arthur, as much as Charlemagne. His story was translated more often in medieval Europe than any work except the Gospels. Yet only small sections of the Alexander Romance have been translated into modern French, and Nigel Bryant's is the first translation into English. The Deeds and Conquests of Alexander the Great is Jehan Wauquelin's superb compendium, written for the Burgundian court in the mid-fifteenth century, which draws together all the key elements of the Alexandrian tradition. With great clarity and intelligence Wauquelin produced a redaction of all the major Alexander romances of the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries - including the verse Roman d'Alexandre, The Vows of the Peacock and La Venjance Alixandre - to tell the whole story of Alexander's miraculous birth and childhood, his conquests of Persia and India, his battles with fabulous beasts and outlandish peoples, his journeys in the sky and under the sea, his poisoning at Babylon and the vengeance taken by his son. This is an accomplished and exciting work by a notable writer at the Burgundian court who perfectly understood the appeal of the great conqueror to ambitious dukes intent upon extending their dominions. Nigel Bryant has translated five major Arthurian romances from medieval French, including Perceforest in which Alexander features prominently. He has also translated the fourteenth-century chronicles of Jean le Bel.

Synopsis The Art of Courtly Love by : Andreas (Capellanus.)
The social system of 'courtly love' soon spread after becoming popularized by the troubadours of southern France in the twelfth century. This book codifies life at Queen Eleanor's court at Poitiers between 1170 and 1174 into "one of those capital works which reflect the thought of a great epoch, which explain the secret of a civilization."
