In developing countries, traditional fishermen are important food contributors, yet technological information and development assistance to third-world nations often focuses on agriculture and industrial fishing, without addressing the needs of independent, small-scale fishermen. This book explores technological considerations of small-scale, primitive fishing technologies, and describes innovative, relatively inexpensive methods and tools that have already been successfully applied in developing countries. It offers practical information about all aspects of small-scale fishing, including boat design and construction, fishing methods and gear, artificial reef construction and fish aggregating devices, techniques for coastal mariculture, and simple methods for processing and preserving fish once they are caught. Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries is illustrated throughout with photographs of the devices and construction methods described in the text.

Aquaculture technology has been evolving rapidly over the last two decades, led by an increasingly skilled cadre of researchers in developing countries. Rather than copying, or adapting work done in industrialized countries to their situations, these scientists are moving aquaculture research out of the box to explore species and production systems relevant to their natural resources, economies and social institutions. Studies from India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa are highlighted in this collection of papers, covering the entire gamut of aquaculture science from comparison of tilapia breeds, novel feed ingredients for indigenous species, improving disease resistance, water-use efficiency, traditional farming systems, spatial planning and economics. More than a how-to book, this volume introduces the researchers and institutions leading the development of aquaculture as it expands into new frontiers. This book was based on a special issue of the Journal of Applied Aquaculture.

Managing Small-Scale Fisheries: Alternative directions and methods

The 2022 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture coincides with the launch of the Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. It presents how these and other equally important United Nations events, such as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), are being integrated and supported through Blue Transformation, a priority area of FAO’s new Strategic Framework 2022–2031 designed to accelerate achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in food and agriculture. The concept of Blue Transformation emerged from the Thirty-fourth Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries in February 2021, and in particular the Declaration for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture, which was negotiated and endorsed by all FAO Members. The Declaration calls for support for “an evolving and positive vision for fisheries and aquaculture in the twenty first century, where the sector is fully recognized for its contribution to fighting poverty, hunger and malnutrition.” In this context, Part 1 of this edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture reviews the world status of fisheries and aquaculture, while Parts 2 and 3 are devoted to Blue Transformation and its pillars on intensifying and expanding aquaculture, improving fisheries management and innovating fisheries and aquaculture value chains. Blue Transformation emphasizes the need for forward-looking and bold actions to be launched or accelerated in coming years to achieve the objectives of the Declaration and in support of the 2030 Agenda. Part 4 covers current and high-impact emerging issues – COVID-19, climate change and gender equality – that require thorough consideration for transformative steps and preparedness to secure sustainable, efficient and equitable fisheries and aquaculture, and finally draws some outlook on future trends based on projections. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience – policymakers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed everyone interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

This study—the result of a collaboration between CSIS and the JICA Research Institute in Japan—reviews U.S. and Japanese public and private approaches to innovation, including building innovation ecosystems and promoting smart cities technology. It also presents two case studies that explore a specific innovative technology and its development impact. First is innovation-enabling platforms, including the Bohol Fabrication Lab, in the Philippines. Second is innovative approaches to urbanization, including a smart cities approach, in Jakarta, Indonesia. The report discusses challenges and approaches to supporting innovation in developing country contexts. It concludes with recommendations and final thoughts for developing-country governments, bilateral donors and multilateral organizations, and other actors to create an agenda around operationalizing transformative innovation for sustainable development and poverty reduction.

Fisheries and Aquaculture theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Fisheries are a major life support system and the main purpose of this theme on Fisheries and Aquaculture is to provide baseline information and latest knowledge at the dawn of this century to facilitate vital fisheries recovery before their irreparable collapse. This Theme on Fisheries and Aquaculture is divided into five topics. It starts with discussions on major issues and challenges in “Harvesting the Seas”, with emphasis on the role and importance of the fisheries sector and its environment, and introduces trends and perspectives in marine fisheries, including allocation of use rights, subsidies, and port management. The next two topics present an in-depth and detailed knowledge on fish and other aquatic living resources that are commercially exploited and/or farmed. The third topic on Inland Fisheries presents salmonid fish, eels, shad, whitefish and smelt, carp, perch, pike and bass, tilapia, frog, and crustaceans. The fourth topic presents a comprehensive review of trends and perspectives in Aquaculture: Principles and Prospects. The fifth topic on Economics of Fisheries and Aquaculture reviews the latest views and concepts useful to apprehend the fisheries management regime, including a comparative static economic theory and a dynamic theory of fishery, spatial bioeconomic dynamics and role of international law in the management of marine fisheries, rights-based and community fisheries management, aquaculture economics, and game theory and fisheries. These five volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.
