Synopsis FIRE WEATHER : A Guide for Application of Meteorological Information to Forest Fire Control Operations - Agriculture Handbook 360 by : U.S. Department of Agriculture

Weather is never static. It is always dynamic. Its interpretation is an art. The art of applying complex information about weather to the equally complex task of wildland fire control cannot be acquired easily especially not by the mere reading of a book. The environment is in control in wildland firefighting. Free-burning fires are literally nourished by weather elements, atmospheric components, and atmospheric motion. Outguessing Mother Nature in order to win control is an extremely difficult task. We need to soothe her with understanding. We have attempted to present information in such a way that your daily and seasonal awareness of fire weather can begin with reliable basic knowledge. We have kept the use of technical terms to a minimum, but where it was necessary for clear and accurate presentation, we have introduced and defined the proper terms. Growing awareness of fire weather, when combined with related experience on fires, can develop into increasingly intuitive, rapid, and accurate applications.

Mountain Meteorology: Fundamentals and Applications offers first an in troduction to the basic principles and concepts of mountain meteorolog y, then goes on to discuss their application in natural resources mana gement. It includes over two hundred, beautiful, full-color photograph s, figures, and diagrams, as well as observable indicators of atmosphe ric processes--such as winds, temperature, and clouds--to facilitate t he recognition of weather systems and events for a variety of readers. It is ideal for those who spend time in or near mountains and whose d aily activities are affected by weather. As a comprehensive work fille d with diverse examples and colorful illustrations, it is essential fo r professionals, scholars, and students of meteorology.

Synopsis Modeling Moisture Content of Fine Dead Wildland Fuels by : Richard C. Rothermel

Describes a model for predicting moisture content of fine fuels for use with the BEHAVE fire behavior and fuel modeling system. The model is intended to meet the need for more accurate predictions of fine fuel moisture, particularly in northern conifer stands and on days following rain. The model is based on the Canadian Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC), modified to account for solar heating of fuels and to predict diurnal trends in fine fuel moisture. The model may be initiated without extensive data on prior weather. When compared to the FFMC and the fire behavior officers' procedures, the new model gave consistently better predictions over the complete range of fuel conditions.
