A reluctant young bride finds her heart pulled in two directions in medieval Normandy in this romance by “a superlative writer” (RT Book Reviews). Although Catherine de Brione is being forced to wed the Norman lord Guy of Rivaux, she has vowed never to give him her heart. That belongs to the dashing Brian FitzHenry, who had held her in thrall since childhood. But she had no inkling of the fire her new bridegroom could rouse within her . . . As the turmoil of intrigue and battle, danger and deception erupt around her in eleventh-century Normandy, Catherine finds that the daring and passionate man she was so eager to leave is now the man she can’t bear to lose. Fire and Steel is a thrilling historical romance from an author whose “unexpected plot twists keep the reader turning pages” (Publishers Weekly). “A superb storyteller.” —Heather Graham, New York Times–bestselling author of Come the Morning

TARMUN VYKERS His awestruck opponents call him The Reaper, an iron-willed man with no memory of his past, a ruthless champion who has risen to the level of death incarnate. But The Reaper has collected a legion of enemies as he cut a bloody swath through the greatest of heroes and villains. And these dogs have finally had their day, exacting a revenge both cruel and creative. Wandering lost, horribly disfigured and unable to fight, Vykers stumbles across the bones of a half-buried skeleton that can transform his ruined body in an inconceivable way. But first he must make a devil’s pact with… ARUNE A secretive, ghostly sorceress with ambitions of her own. If Vykers wants to wield a sword again, he must surrender to Arune that which he holds most dear. But can he trust this ethereal enchantress to hold up her end of their dangerous bargain? Vykers has few good choices, and he must make them quickly, for an impossibly talented and savage wizard has arisen to threaten all of humanity… THE END OF ALL THINGS Once an autistic boy hardly able to speak, The End has evolved into a supernatural terror bent on extinguishing all life. A fearsome and unequaled tactician, The End is the only person who doesn’t fear “The Reaper.” To have any hope of defeating this bloodthirsty mage, Vykers must gather the strangest, most dangerous cohort of killers ever assembled. Then he must seek out the only weapon that can defeat this terrible adversary… THE EPIC BATTLE Behold the greatest clash of men, monsters, and Fey that the kingdom has ever known. Vykers, at the head of his outnumbered contingent, launches a desperate attack against The End, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. But The End is a creature worthy of his name. He has forged a secret weapon, a wicked and terrible instrument that will break through Vykers’ defenses and exact a devastating toll. Only one thing is certain, this extraordinary battle will end in a way that no one could have predicted!

Structural design in fire conditions is conceptually similar to structural design in normal temperature conditions, but often more difficult because of internal forces induced by thermal expansion, strength reduction due to elevated temperatures, much larger deflections, and numerous other factors. Before making any design decisions it is esse

This book explains and illustrates the rules that are given in the Eurocodes for designing steel structures subjected to fire. After the first introductory chapter, Chapter 2 explains how to calculate the mechanical actions (loads) in the fire situation based on the information given in EN 1990 and EN 1991. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the models which represent the thermal actions created by the fire. Chapter 4 describes the procedures to be used to calculate the temperature of the steelwork from the temperature of the compartment and Chapter 5 shows how the information given in EN 1993-1-2 is used to determine the load bearing capacity of the steel structure. Chapter 6 presents the essential features that characterize the advanced calculation models, for thermal and mechanical response. The methods used to evaluate the fire resistance of bolted and welded connections are described in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 describes a computer program called `Elefir-EN? which is based on the simple calculation model given in the Eurocode and allows designers to quickly and accurately calculate the performance of steel components in the fire situation. Chapter 9 looks at the issues that a designer may be faced with when assessing the fire resistance of a complete building. This is done via a case study and addresses most of the concepts presented in the previous chapters. For this second edition the content has been revised and extended. The book contains some new sections, e.g. a comparison between the simple and the advanced calculation, as well as additional examples.

Dara Ruminor is a serious young duelist in the mountaintop kingdom of Vertigon, a land of dramatic cliffs and misty peaks where mysterious Fire magic runs through the stones like blood. The secluded kingdom has been peaceful for a hundred years. Swords are used for sport, and successful athletes live like kings as long as the crowds love them. Eighteen-year-old Dara needs to find a wealthy patron in order to duel professionally and avoid a lifetime working in her parents' Fire Lantern shop. Her efforts are disrupted when her coach asks her to train with Prince Siv, an infuriating-if handsome-young man who refuses to take the sport as seriously as she does. But the prince's life may be in danger, and soon Dara will discover that Vertigon isn't as peaceful as she thought. As threats emerge from the shadows, Dara will have to raise her sword to protect Siv-if he doesn't irritate her so much that she decides to run him through herself. From the author of the Seabound Chronicles comes a new fantasy series about sword fighting, cur-dragons, molten Fire magic, and one young woman's effort to prove herself.

Fire can fascinate, inspire, capture the imagination and bring families and communities together. It has the ability to amaze, energise and touch something deep inside all of us. For thousands of years, at every corner of the globe, humans have been huddling around fires: from the basic and primitive essentials of light, heat, energy and cooking, through to modern living, fire plays a central role in all of our lives. The ability to accurately and quickly light a fire is one of the most important skills anyone setting off on a wilderness adventure could possess, yet very little has been written about it. Through his narrative Hume also meditates on the wider topics surrounding fire and how it shapes the world around us.

Adolf Hitler has completed his transformation of the German Republic into a total dictatorship. The Great Depression and relentless drought continue to ravage the United States. In all corners of the world, fear and uncertainty seem to rule the day. Can there be any hope on the horizon? Into the Flames, the sixth and final installment of Gerald N. Lund's Fire and Steel series, brings new experiences, new challenges, new opportunities, and not a few tragedies into the lives of the Eckhardt and Westland families. In America, Mitch and Edie continue their struggle to hang on to the ranch that has been their family's hone for nearly fifty years, while Benji's quest to find work turns catastrophic and sets him on a new path that will take him to exotic climes and an unexpected reunion. In Germany, Hans makes a dangerous, life-changing decision to leave Nazi Party leadership and seek a new career. But when the ugly specter of anti-Semitism wields a direct and devastating impact on the Eckhardt family, they too are drawn into a maelstrom of events that threatens to destroy the very fabric of their lives. As 1938 draws to a close and the dark clouds of war move in, the families must draw on their faith and courage to endure whatever life has in store for them.

This book is an authoritative account of the latest developments in fire performance and fire resistant design of thin-walled steel structures. It provides a comprehensive review of recent research, including fire tests of thin-walled steel structural members and systems, numerical modelling of heat transfer and structural behaviour, elevated temperature material properties, methods of improving fire resistance of thin-walled steel structures, and performance based fire resistant design methods. Worked examples navigate the reader through some of the complexities of this specialist subject. This is the first book devoted to the fundamental principles of this emerging subject, as thin-walled steel structures are increasingly being used in building construction. It will be valuable to fire protection engineers who want to optimise fire resistant design of thin-walled steel structures, and specialist manufacturers needing to control fire resistance of thin-walled steel structural systems, as well as to the research community.
