Synopsis Before and After Getting Your Puppy by : Ian Dunbar
How to raise the perfect puppy A revolution for dogs: Very few dog trainers have not been influenced by Dr. Ian Dunbar’s dog-friendly philosophy. In the 1970s, Dr. Ian Dunbar sparked a dramatic shift in puppy training — away from leash corrections and drill-sergeant adult dog training classes based on competitive obedience and toward a positive approach using toys, treats, and games as rewards for teaching basic manners, preventing behavior problems, and modifying temperament. Before Dr. Dunbar there were no classes for puppy training, very few family dog classes, and not much fun in dog training. His positive approach revolutionized the dog training field, especially puppy training. Raising a great dog: Now, in Before and After Getting Your Puppy, Dr. Ian Dunbar combines his two popular puppy training manuals into one indexed, value-priced hardcover dog training book. In clear steps, with helpful photos and easy-to-follow puppy training milestones, he presents a structured yet playful and humorous plan for raising a wonderful dog. Dr. Dunbar’s guide is based around six developmental milestones: Your doggy education Evaluating puppy’s progress Errorless housetraining and chewtoy-training Socialization with People Learning bite inhibition The world at large Fans of The Art of Raising a Puppy, Training the Best Dog Ever, or Zak George’s Dog Training Revolution, will love Ian Dunbar’s Before and After Getting Your Puppy.

Synopsis The Year of the Puppy by : Alexandra Horowitz
“What Mr. Rogers was to children, Alexandra Horowitz is to dogs: a wise and patient observer who seeks to intimately know a creature... Her chapters, packed with close observations about canine cognition and behavior, are mini-mood lifters." —NPR, Maureen Corrigan on Fresh Air What is it like to be a puppy? Author of the classic Inside of a Dog, Alexandra Horowitz tries to find out, spending a year scrutinizing her puppy’s daily existence and poring over the science of early dog development Few of us meet our dogs at Day One. The dog who will, eventually, become an integral part of our family, our constant companion and best friend, is born without us into a family of her own. A puppy's critical early development into the dog we come to know is usually missed entirely. Dog researcher Alexandra Horowitz aimed to change that with her family's new pup, Quiddity (Quid). In this scientific memoir, she charts Quid's growth from wee grub to boisterous sprite, from her birth to her first birthday. Horowitz follows Quid's first weeks with her mother and ten roly-poly littermates, and then each week after the puppy joins her household of three humans, two large dogs, and a wary cat. She documents the social and cognitive milestones that so many of us miss in our puppies' lives, when caught up in the housetraining and behavioral training that easily overwhelms the first months of a dog's life with a new family. In focusing on training a dog to behave, we mostly miss the radical development of a puppy into themselves—through the equivalent of infancy, childhood, young adolescence, and teenager-hood. By slowing down to observe Quid from week to week, The Year of the Puppy makes new sense of a dog's behavior in a way that is missed when the focus is only on training. Horowitz keeps a lens on the puppy's point of view—how they (begin to) see and smell the world, make meaning of it, and become an individual personality. She's there when the puppies first open their eyes, first start to recognize one another and learn about cats, sheep, and people; she sees them from their first play bows to puberty. Horowitz also draws from the ample research in the fields of dog and human development to draw analogies between a dog's first year and the growing child—and to note where they diverge. The Year of the Puppy is indispensable for anyone navigating their way through the frustrating, amusing, and ultimately delightful first year of a puppy’s life.

Synopsis After You Get Your Puppy by : Ian Dunbar
Now you have your puppy, the clock is ticking and you need to meet three more Developmental Deadlines before your puppy is five months old.4th Developmental Deadline - Socializing Your Puppy to PeopleYour Most Urgent Priority is to socialize your puppy to a wide variety of people, especially children, men, and strangers, before he is twelve weeks old. Well-socialized puppies grow up to be wonderful companions, whereas antisocial dogs are difficult, time-consuming, and potentially dangerous. As a rule of thumb, your puppy needs to meet at least one hundred people before he is three months old. Since your puppy is still too young to venture out to dog parks and sidewalks, you'll need to start inviting people to your home right away.5th Developmental Deadline - Teaching Bite InhibitionYour Most Important Priority is that your puppy learns to inhibit the force of his bites and develop a "soft mouth"; before he is eighteen weeks old. Whenever a dog bites a person, or fights with another dog, the single most important prognostic factor is the degree of bite inhibition and hence, the likelihood and seriousness of injury. Accidents happen. Someone may tread on the dog's paw, or a child may trip over the dog while he's gnawing a bone. A dog may snap and lunge at a person when hurt or frightened, but if the dog has well-established bite inhibition, it is unlikely the dog's teeth will puncture, or even touch the skin.6th Developmental Deadline - Continuing Socialization in The World at LargeThe Most Enjoyable Priority of dog ownership is to introduce your well-socialized puppy to the world at large. Your dog will only remain sociable and confident if he continues to meet and greet at least three unfamiliar people and three unfamiliar dogs every day. Meeting the same people and dogs over and over is not sufficient. Your dog needs to practice meeting, greeting, and getting along with strangers, not simply getting along with old friends. Regular walks with your dog are as essential as they are enjoyable.

Synopsis Jake and Julia Find the Puppy’S Home by : Ed Goebig
Jake and Julia love to play outside, so moving to their new house with a big yard made them very happy. One day while playing outside on a nice sunny day, a little puppy ran up to see them. Since Jake and Julias family had just moved to the new neighborhood, they have never seen the puppy before. Having had a dog before, they were very friendly to the puppy. The puppy was just as friendly to them. They were petting the puppy for a few minutes assuming its owner would soon arrive. To their surprise no one showed. The puppy did not have a collar or tag so Jake and Julia did not know where the puppy lived. Instead of asking their Dad for help, they decided to help the puppy on their own. Julia came up with the idea to go door to door to find the puppys family. Jake and Julia were on a mission to help this lost puppy. After they set off, their Dad came outside and the kids were nowhere to be found. Their Dad called their names a couple times and did not get a response. As Jake and Julias Father began to get a little nervous, his next door neighbor came outside. He told their Father two kids just came to their door with a puppy to ask if it lived there. The puppy did not live there so the kids continued on. The neighbor said the kids headed across the street. As their Father left the neighbors house, he sees Jake and Julia running up their driveway. As he meets up with his kids, they were so excited about what they did. Jake says, we found a lost puppy his home and his name is Sam! While their Father was proud for what they did, he did explain to Jake and Julia they are not allowed to leave the yard without telling him. The next day, Sam was being walked by his owner when he sees Jake and Julia playing outside. This time he is on a leash and brings his owner to the kids to say hi and thanks for finding his home.
