This book intends to focus exclusively on anamorphic experiments in contemporary art and design, leaving an in-depth historical examination of its Baroque season to other studies. Themes, languages and fields of application of anamorphosis in contemporary culture are critically analyzed to make the reader aware of the communicative potentiality of this kind of geometrical technique. The book also has the aim to teach the reader the most appropriate geometric techniques for each of them, in order to achieve the designed illusion. Each typology of anamorphosis is accompanied in this book by contemporary installations, a geometrical explanation by means of 3D models and didactic experiments carried on in collaboration with the students of the Department of Architecture in Naples.

Transforming Type examines kinetic or moving type in a range of fields including film credits, television idents, interactive poetry and motion graphics. As the screen increasingly imitates the properties of real-life environments, typographic sequences are able to present letters that are active and reactive. These environments invite new discussions about the difference between motion and change, global and local transformation, and the relationship between word and image. In this illuminating study, Barbara Brownie explores the ways in which letterforms transform on screen, and the consequences of such transformations. Drawing on examples including Kyle Cooper's title sequence design, kinetic poetry and MPC's idents for the UK's Channel 4, she differentiates motion from other kinds of kineticism, with particular emphasis on the transformation of letterforms into other forms and objects, through construction, parallax and metamorphosis. She proposes that each of these kinetic behaviours requires us to revisit existing assumptions about the nature of alphabetic forms and the spaces in which they are found.

But his seclusion in the remote Nevada desert, as well as his notorious obduracy, have resulted in significant gaps in our critical understanding. Michael Heizer: The Once and Future Monuments spans the breadth of Heizer's career, uniquely combining fieldwork, personal narrative, and biographical research to create the first major assessment in years of this titan of American art. Author William L. Fox, founding director of the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, has alternately been a sponsor, advocate, and critic of Heizer's work for decades. Fox's understanding of the artist's history and connection to landscape, his time spent with Heizer at the remote ranch where Heizer is finishing his magnum opus--the mile-long sculpture City--and his access to some of Heizer's key associates give him a unique position from which to discuss the artist's work. The book promotes the use of formal methods in the creation of new explicit languages for problem solving in architecture and urbanism. Formal methods bring advantages to human actions and involve the use of theoretically driven techniques, expressed in languages stemmed from mathematics. Formalization seeks to guarantee that solutions for daily problems are produced in a manner that ensures their greatest possible adequacy and the least test time in direct confrontation with reality. This book contributes to the progress of formalization in architectural methodologies by finding points of convergence between state of the art research on ontologies in architecture, BIM/VDC, CAD/CAM, cellular automata, GIS, parametric processes, processing and space syntax presented within the 3rd Symposium of Formal Methods in Architecture. The contents reach from millennial geometry to current shape grammars, engaging several formal approaches to architecture and urbanism, with different points of view, fields of application, grades of abstraction and formalization.

Joint speech includes chanting, singing in unison, swearing public oaths, hollering at political rallies, and the humble ritual of singing “Happy Birthday”. It is found wherever people speak or sing the same words at the same time. This familiar behavior is found in prayer and ritual, in protest, on the football terraces, in classrooms, and in many other situations of note. These occasions are considered highly significant to those who take part, and yet joint speech has not been addressed from a scientific or linguistic perspective until now. This book provides a broad framing of how we might study joint speech. It explores topics in linguistics, movement science, neuroscience, and beyond, but it does not assume the reader is at home in any of these. Rather, joint speech is familiar to us all, and the discussion here leads to a broader consideration of how we understand our collective nature. The topic provides an opportunity to address the difficulties and opportunities we encounter in considering collective subjects, collective meaning-making, and collective identities. Joint speech thus opens the door to a renewal of the human sciences in which we are not merely individuals, but are grounded in collectives of many kinds.
