This sly and humorous novel by Fakir Mohan Senapati—one of the pioneering spirits of modern Indian literature and an early activist in the fight against the destruction of native Indian languages—is both a literary work and a historical document. A text that makes use—and deliberate misuse—of both British and Indian literary conventions, Six Acres and a Third provides a unique "view from below" of Indian village life under colonial rule. Set in Orissa in the 1830s, the novel focuses on a small plot of land, tracing the lives and fortunes of people who are affected by the way this property is sold and resold, as new legal arrangements emerge and new types of people come to populate and transform the social landscape. Written originally in Oriya in 1945 and translated here for the first time, Paraja is a classic of modern Indian fiction. It tells on an epic scale the story of a tribal patriarch and his family in the mountainous jungles of Orissa. The slow decline in the fortunes of this family - from the quiet prosperity of a subsistence livelihood towards bondage to the local moneylender - is both poignantly individualized as well as symbolic of the erosion of a whole way of life within peasant communities. The novel, furthermore, transcends what it documents because its characters are not merely primitive tribesmen ensnared by a predatory moneylender. Mohanty's protagonists are also quintessentially men and women waging heroic but futile war against a hostile universe. As the citation of the Jnanpith Award of 1974 put it - 'in Mohanty's hands the social is lifted to the level of the metaphysical.'

This study argues that realism in twentieth-century Indian literature functioned as a mode of experimentation and aesthetic innovation - not merely as mimesis of the "real world." The second decade (2010-2019) of the new millennium was significant for India. Her rise in a multipolar world had its fitting moments. Powered by a rapidly expanding economy and a favorable demographic trend, India charted its own course to success with a few assertive steps for an optimistic future. Change was more glaring in India during this period when it came to politics. These mutable dynamics with shifting of the political narrative from liberal to the right meant one thing: the government would be decisive in action and would not hesitate from taking radical steps if something was in the national interest. Imposing the GST, demonetization were the radical steps taken which had its share of miseries as well. This book is a throwback to those episodic events – economic, social, political, and developmental plus a sundry lot.
