Facing the most formidably concentrated air defences in history, pilots of the F-105D flew against North Vietnamese targets day after day during the 43 months of Operation Rolling Thunder. In February 1999, only a few weeks before the U.S. Air Force spearheaded NATO's Allied Force air campaign against Serbia, Col. C.R. Anderegg, USAF (Ret.), visited the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Colonel Anderegg had known Gen. "The fielding of automated flight controls and weapons systems in fighter aircraft from 1950 to 1980 challenged the significance ascribed to several of the pilots' historical skillsets, such as superb hand-eye coordination--required for aggressive stick-and-rudder maneuvering--and perfect eyesight and crack marksmanship--required for long-range visual detection and destruction of the enemy. This is the last installment in a trilogy about my hometowns involvement in our countrys mid-twentieth-century wars. I researched the pages of the Nashua Telegraph from 1060 through 1973, looking for names, leads, and stories about local men and women who participated in Americas most contentious war. The paper published news and features from Derry/Salem, east of Nashua, west to Jaffrey/Rindge, and north to New Boston. The Nashua Telegraph also covered Tyngsboro, Pepperell, and Dunstable, Massachusetts. Sadly, times for newspapers have changed, and the Telegraph has a much-reduced coverage area.

The Northrop F-5 series is one of the longest-serving fighters in the world. The Freedom Fighter was the first 'lightweight fighter" and the first international fighter serving in air forces throughout the free world. The F-5 Tiger II is even more prolific and is still in service with USAF and US Navy aggressor squadrons. The T-38 Talon was derived from the original NF-156 design that produced the Freedom Fighter. The T-38 has trained over 70,000 USAF pilots and is still in service 60 years after its first flight. It is still used by NASA and others.
