Synopsis Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy by : R. Schulze

Excerpt from Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy: For Teachers, Normal Colleges, and Universities The present volume has found a wide sale in Germany, and the translator trusts it will be of help to students and teachers in Britain and America. It makes no claim to be a complete text-book or manual of experimental psychology. The author emphasises this in his preface. It merely deals with those methods of experimental psychology that are particularly adapted to educational purposes. The author himself has carried out many experiments and these he takes as a foundation for his work. Many are not exact, and many are merely tentative, but such work is of value to the beginner, for it shows him what he must expect in his own work, and the suggestions of the author as to where further experiments are required are in valuable. Most of these experiments were carried out in the Psychological Institute of the Leipsic Teachers' Associa tion, an institute founded and supported by an associa tion of elementary school teachers. This should prove a stimulus to British associations to follow on the same lines. Only by making education a science can teachers hope to raise the status of their profession. Synopsis Experimental Pedagogy and the Psychology of the Child by : Ed; Claparède

Excerpt from Experimental Pedagogy and the Psychology of the Child This new edition differs from preceding editions by many alterations: the Historical Sketch is included for the first time, Chapters II., III., and V. have been completed and more or less remodelled; on the other hand, the chapter on Mental Development has been but little changed. The volume as a whole has been increased by nearly 200 pages, and the authors quoted now number 630 as against 250. In some of the reviews of this work, regret has been expressed that it did not contain more practical advice for the pedagogue. But my aim in writing the book was not to compile a manual of pedagogy; I simply wished to introduce the educator to psychological science, and particularly to the psychology of the child. The first steps taken in learning a new science are always tiresome and difficult: time is lost in finding one's bearings, in understanding what exactly is the aim of the science, in discovering the problems which it tries to solve; therefore a guide is often very valuable. To be such a guide is the function of this book, at least a guide to the study of those problems which are here treated.
