Synopsis Evaluating the Local Impacts of the Rio Olympics by : Marcelo Neri

This book evaluates the local impacts and legacies of the Olympics in Rio by comparing Rio2016 with other Olympic experiences and evaluating the ways in which the Games served the city. The 2016 Rio Olympic Games took place in a scenario of enormous economic challenges and persistent inequalities. In contrast to all previous Olympic experiences, Brazil faced its worst economic recession ever recorded during the preparation phase for the Games. In addition to the national crisis, falling oil prices and corruption scandals fuelled the State of Rio’s economic downfall. This book specifically assesses the relative social performance of Rio’s city population with respect to control groups; covers traditional aspects of the Games' legacy such as tourism, infrastructure and sports practice; includes ordinary day-by-day aspects of the city’s life, such as education, employment and housing; and scrutinizes critical areas such as urban mobility, gentrification and Guanabara Bay’s pollution. This thorough analysis offers readers further understanding on assessing the impacts and legacies of the Olympic experience. It will be of great interest to upper-level students and academics of tourism, hospitality and events management.

Synopsis Rio 2016 by : Andrew Zimbalist

" A clear-eyed, critical examination of the social, political, and economic costs of hosting the 2016 summer Olympics The selection of Rio de Janeiro as the site of the summer 2016 Olympic Games set off jubilant celebrations in Brazil—and created enormous expectations for economic development and the advancement of Brazil as a major player on the world stage. Although the games were held without major incident, the economic, environmental, political, and social outcomes for Brazil ranged from disappointing to devastating. Corruption scandals trimmed the fat profits that many local real estate developers had envisioned, and the local government was driven into bankruptcy. At the other end of the economic spectrum, some 77,000 residents of Rio's poorest neighborhoods—the favelas—were evicted and forced to move, in many cases as far as 20 or 30 miles to the west. Hosting the games ultimately cost Brazil $20 billion, with little positive to show for the investment. Rio 2016 assembles the views of leading experts on Brazil and the Olympics into a clear-eyed assessment of the impact of the games on Brazil in general and on the lives of Cariocas, as Rio's residents are known. Edited by sports economist Andrew Zimbalist, the other contributors include Juliana Barbassa, Jules Boykoff, Jamil Chade, Stephen Essex, Renata Latuf, and Theresa Williamson. "

Synopsis Olympic Dreams by : Matthew Burbank

What drives cities to pursue large-scale, high-profile events like the Olympic games? What are the consequences for citizens and local governments? Investigating local politics in three U.S. cities - Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City - as they vied for the role of Olympic host, this book provides a compelling narrative of the evolving political economy of modern megaevents. The authors reveal how the megaevent strategy typically is initiated by a coalition of public and private elites; how citizen involvement is managed and often curtailed; and how latent development agendas are revived and refocused to leverage Olympic opportunities. In assessing the impact of megaevent-driven growth, they look beyond the tax revenues and stadium costs to offer a nuanced examination of the ways Olympic dreams affect local governance and social conditions in urban economies.

Synopsis Ageing and the Visitor Economy by : Stephen J. Page

This significant volume is the first to use primary research evidence to examine tourism, ageing and the implications of an ageing population for the visitor economy. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this book offers insights into the new opportunities, threats and challenges that the growing ageing-tourism markets poses. The ageing population has created a demographic time bomb with a population structure that is skewed towards a growing proportion of older people. When this is combined with the impact of health conditions, such as dementia, the future shape of visitor demand and tourism behaviour is likely to change and face many new challenges, albeit at different rates in time and space. Chapters include cutting-edge insights into future issues, while interviews are used to illustrate and explain issues affecting ageing and tourism, creating a much-needed synthesis of the ageing–tourism nexus to demonstrate intellectual leadership around this theme. This book will be of great interest to all upper-level students, academics and researchers in the fields of tourism, hospitality, leisure studies, and health and social care.

Synopsis Communities in Action by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Synopsis Management Performance of Rio 2016 Olympic Games by : Michel Cutait

The Olympic legacies have become one of the main reasons to justify hosting the Olympic Games, but it is not easy or simple to evaluate the performance of these legacies because it requires a methodology that can evaluate the planning, execution and outcome of all actions, programs and projects adopted by the host cities for the benefit of society. Many experts have discussed and researched the legacies of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, but there are limited studies that offer a proposal for evaluating the performance of the delivery and fulfillment of the legacies. This work had this objective, to apply a methodology capable of evaluating and obtaining conclusions that help to understand if the Olympic legacies became a reality in these Games. Through this work it was possible to evaluate and measure about 31 Olympic legacies that were created because of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The conclusions reached were very positive, offering an objective perspective so that the legacies presented in this research continue to be observed, studied and evaluated, as well as serve as good examples for the next Olympic Games, keeping the Olympic flame alive.
