Synopsis Annuaire Européen / European Year Book by : Council of Europe Staff

The Treaty of Rome makes no mention of the Mediterranean basin as such, inc1udes not a single provision for the defining of specific relations with that region as a whole. There are only, as a hang-over from the French and Italian colonialist past, certain Dec1arations, in the Appendices, regard ing a possible association of Tunis, Morocco, Libya with the new under taking. And, of course, there is Artic1e 113 prescribing, at the end of the Community's transition period, the common trade policy - plus the Artic1e (238) giving blanket authorisation for association agreements. These legal prescriptions were duly implemented in the Association Agreements with Greece (1961) and Turkey (1963) and have supplied the basis for bilateral instruments in respect of other Mediterranean lands - ad hoc, pragmatic ar rangements. In the circumstances the Community could scarcely have proceeded otherwise. Yet the outlines of a European economic policy with regard to the countries of the Mediterranean basin were there from the beginning -limited, however, over the years by the internal development of the Community itself. One is reminded in this connection of sundry invoca tions by European and Mediterranean personalities and members of the European Commission - and, specifically, of a Memorandum presented by Italy to the Council of Ministers in 1964.

Synopsis Structural Bridge Engineering by : Shahiron Shahidan

There are many books on preliminary studies and research in bridge design as well as basic knowledge on bridge engineering, but most books supply the needs of practicing engineers who may have problems in estimating, designing or constructing suspension bridges. Therefore, this book is intended to serve as a source of information for problems related to bridge engineering including sustainable bridge development, traditional approaches and recent advances in highway bridge traffic loading, aesthetic analysis issues in designing a new bridge, applications of various methods for the dissipation of seismic energy for bridges, new technologies of bridge design as well as structural identification of bridges using non-destructive experimental measurement tests.

Synopsis Digital Signal Processing and Spectral Analysis for Scientists by : Silvia Maria Alessio

This book covers the basics of processing and spectral analysis of monovariate discrete-time signals. The approach is practical, the aim being to acquaint the reader with the indications for and drawbacks of the various methods and to highlight possible misuses. The book is rich in original ideas, visualized in new and illuminating ways, and is structured so that parts can be skipped without loss of continuity. Many examples are included, based on synthetic data and real measurements from the fields of physics, biology, medicine, macroeconomics etc., and a complete set of MATLAB exercises requiring no previous experience of programming is provided. Prior advanced mathematical skills are not needed in order to understand the contents: a good command of basic mathematical analysis is sufficient. Where more advanced mathematical tools are necessary, they are included in an Appendix and presented in an easy-to-follow way. With this book, digital signal processing leaves the domain of engineering to address the needs of scientists and scholars in traditionally less quantitative disciplines, now facing increasing amounts of data.

Synopsis How to Find Out About Engineering by : S. A. J. Parsons

How to Find Out About Engineering provides a guide to sources of information on engineering and its various branches. Topics include branches of engineering, careers in engineering, sources of engineering-related information, libraries, handbooks, patents, dictionaries and encyclopedias, and periodical literature. Engineering organizations as well as education and training for careers in engineering are also considered. This volume consists of 20 chapters; the first of which introduces the reader to jobs available in the engineering industry, along with guides and sources of information on careers. The discussion then turns to sources of information on engineering such as bibliographies, reference works, publishers' and booksellers' catalogs, government publications, and industrial liaison centers in Britain. The chapters that follow focus on libraries and other sources of information that are available to engineers and engineering students, including handbooks, standards, patents, and technical drawings and designs. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, theses, and translations are also covered. In addition, the book includes chapters on the history and biography of engineering as well as different branches of engineering, from mechanical to chemical, aeronautical, and agricultural engineering. This book will be of interest to all persons engaged in the engineering profession or are contemplating on entering the profession.
