Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the most frequently used tools for programming according to the message passing paradigm, which is considered one of the best ways to develop parallel appli- tions. This volume comprises 50 revised contributions presented at the Eighth - ropean PVM/MPI Users’ Group Meeting, which was held on Santorini (Thera), Greece,23–26September2001.TheconferencewasorganizedbytheDepartment of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, Greece. This conference has been previously held in Balatofured, ̈ Hungary (2000), Barcelona, Spain (1999), Liverpool, UK (1998), and Krakow, Poland (1997). The ?rst three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held at the TU Munich, Germany (1996), the ENS Lyon, France (1995), and the University of Rome (1994). This conference has become a forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other message passing environments. Interaction between these groups has proved to be very useful for developing new ideas in parallel computing and for applying some of those already existent to new practical ?elds. The main topics of the meeting were evaluation and performance of PVM and MPI, extensions and improvements to PVM and MPI, algorithms using the message passing paradigm,andapplicationsinscienceandengineeringbasedonmessagepassing. The conference included one tutorial on MPI and 9 invited talks on advances in MPI, cluster computing, network computing, Grid computing, and parallel programming and programming systems. These proceedings contain papers on the 46 oral presentations together with 4 poster presentations.

Euro-Par – the European Conference on Parallel Computing – is an international conference series dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of parallel computing. The major themes can be divided into the broad categories of hardware, software, algorithms, and applications for parallel computing. The objective of Euro-Par is to provide a forum within which to promote the dev- opment of parallel computing both as an industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the frontiers of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. This is particularlyimportant at a time when parallel computing is undergoing strong and sustained development and experiencing real ind- trial take up. The main audience for and participants in Euro-Par are seen as researchers in academic departments, government laboratories, and industrial organisations. Euro-Par aims to become the primarychoice of such professionals for the presentation of new results in their speci?c areas. Euro-Par is also int- ested in applications that demonstrate the e?ectiveness of the main Euro-Par themes. Euro-Par has its own Internet domain with a permanent web site where the historyof the conference series is described: http://www. euro-par. org. The Euro-Par conference series is sponsored bythe Association of Computer Machineryand the International Federation of Information Processing. Euro-Par 2001 Euro-Par 2001 was organised bythe Universityof Manchester and UMIST.

This book includes a set of rigorously reviewed world-class manuscripts addressing and detailing state-of-the-art research projects in the areas of Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Information Sciences. The book presents selected papers from the conference proceedings of the International Conference on Systems, Computing Sciences and Software Engineering (SCSS 2006). This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages, COORDINATION 2006, held in Bologna, Italy, June 2006. The 17 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 50 submissions. Among the topics addressed are component connectors, negotiation in service-oriented computing, process algebraic specification, workflow patterns, reactive XML, ubiquitous coordination, type systems, ad-hoc network coordination, choreography, communication coordination, and distributed embedded systems.

This millennium will see the increased use of parallel computing technologies at all levels of mainstream computing. Most computer hardware will use these technologies to achieve higher computing speeds, high speed access to very large distributed databases and greater flexibility through heterogeneous computing. These developments can be expected to result in the extended use of all types of parallel computers in virtually all areas of human endeavour. Compute-intensive problems in emerging areas such as financial modelling and multimedia systems, in addition to traditional application areas of parallel computing such as scientific computing and simulation, will stimulate the developments. This book is the ?nal outcome of VECPAR 2000 – 4th International Meeting on Vector and Parallel Processing. VECPAR constitutes a series of conferences, which have been organized by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto since 1993, with the main objective of disseminating new knowledge on parallel computing. Readership of This Book The book is aimed at an audience of researchers and graduate students in a broad range of scienti?c areas, including not only computer science, but also applied mathematics and numerical analysis, physics, and engineering. Book Plan From a total of 66 papers selected on the basis of extended abstracts for p- sentation at the conference, a subset of 34 papers were chosen during a second review process leading to their inclusion in the book, together with the invited talks. The book contains a total of 40 papers organized into 6 chapters, where each may appeal to people in di?erent but still related scienti?c areas. All ch- ters, with the exception of Chapter 6, are initiated by a short text, providing a quick overview of the organization and papers in the chapter. The 13 papers in Chapter 1 cover the aspects related to the use of multiple processors. Operating systems, languages and software tools for scheduling, and code transformation are the topics included in this chapter, initiated by the talk on computing over the Internet, entitled Grid Computing,byIan Foster.

Euro-Par’99 The format of Euro-Par’99follows that of the past four conferences and consists of a number of topics eachindividually monitored by a committee of four. There were originally 23 topics for this year’s conference. The call for papers attracted 343 submissions of which 188 were accepted. Of the papers accepted, 4 were judged as distinguished, 111 as regular and 73 as short papers.

Parallel and distributed computation has been gaining a great lot of attention in the last decades. During this period, the advances attained in computing and communication technologies, and the reduction in the costs of those technolo gies, played a central role in the rapid growth of the interest in the use of parallel and distributed computation in a number of areas of engineering and sciences. Many actual applications have been successfully implemented in various plat forms varying from pure shared-memory to totally distributed models, passing through hybrid approaches such as distributed-shared memory architectures. Parallel and distributed computation differs from dassical sequential compu tation in some of the following major aspects: the number of processing units, independent local dock for each unit, the number of memory units, and the programming model. For representing this diversity, and depending on what level we are looking at the problem, researchers have proposed some models to abstract the main characteristics or parameters (physical components or logical mechanisms) of parallel computers. The problem of establishing a suitable model is to find a reasonable trade-off among simplicity, power of expression and universality. Then, be able to study and analyze more precisely the behavior of parallel applications.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on High-Performance Computing and Networking, HPCN Europe 2000, held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in May 2000. The 52 revised full papers presented together with 34 revised posters were carefully reviewed for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in sections on problem solving environments, metacomputing, load balancing, numerical parallel algorithms, virtual enterprises and virtual laboratories, cooperation coordination, Web-based tools for tele-working, monitoring and performance, low-level algorithms, Java in HPCN, cluster computing, data analysis, and applications in a variety of fields.
