Synopsis Euclid's Elements with Exercises Instructor's Copy by : Kathryn Goulding
The instructor's edition of Euclid's Elements With Exercises is intended as a guide for anyone teaching Euclid for the first time. Although it could be used by anyone, it was assembled and written with small schools or homeschooling groups in mind. In addition to containing the first six books in exactly the format of the student edition (also available on Amazon), the instructor's edition provides a concise overview of the course, including suggestions for conducting the class, a discussion of the organization of the material, brief comments on supplemental and memory work, and other details about which a new instructor might have questions. It also has notes for the teacher on each of the six books of the Elements, notes on selected exercises, and an appendix explaining the basics of formal reasoning, including an explanation of the converse and contrapositive of a statement and the concept of an indirect proof, which occurs early in Book I. The primary difference between this work and Euclid's Elements as it is usually presented (aside from the fact that there are some exercises), is that, while all of Books I - VI are included in the book, some propositions are omitted in the main body of the text (all omitted propositions are in Appendix A). This was done in order to be able to finish in two semesters all the plane geometry that would normally be covered in a modern geometry class. It should be noted, of course, that the flow of logic of the propositions is never interrupted. This book was not designed for the purist. Although it is pure Euclid and contains all of the first six books, it may offend the sensibilities of some who love Euclid (as the assembler/author does) to fail to place Book II in the expected flow of the main body of the text. For anyone not under a time constraint, or anyone moving quickly through the text, the author strongly recommends the inclusion of Book II in the course flow.

Synopsis The First Six Books of the Elements of Euclid by : John Casey
This edition of the Elements of Euclid, undertaken at the request of the principalsof some of the leading Colleges and Schools of Ireland, is intended tosupply a want much felt by teachers at the present day-the production of awork which, while giving the unrivalled original in all its integrity, would alsocontain the modern conceptions and developments of the portion of Geometryover which the Elements extend. A cursory examination of the work will showthat the Editor has gone much further in this latter direction than any of hispredecessors, for it will be found to contain, not only more actual matter thanis given in any of theirs with which he is acquainted, but also much of a specialcharacter, which is not given, so far as he is aware, in any former work on thesubject. The great extension of geometrical methods in recent times has madesuch a work a necessity for the student, to enable him not only to read with advantage, but even to understand those mathematical writings of modern timeswhich require an accurate knowledge of Elementary Geometry, and to which itis in reality the best introduction

Synopsis Euclid's Elements of Geometry by : Euclid
EUCLID'S ELEMENTS OF GEOMETRY, in Greek and English. The Greek text of J.L. Heiberg (1883-1885), edited, and provided with a modern English translation, by Richard Fitzpatrick.[Description from Wikipedia: ] The Elements (Ancient Greek: Στοιχεῖον Stoikheîon) is a mathematical treatise consisting of 13 books (all included in this volume) attributed to the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid in Alexandria, Ptolemaic Egypt c. 300 BC. It is a collection of definitions, postulates, propositions (theorems and constructions), and mathematical proofs of the propositions. The books cover plane and solid Euclidean geometry, elementary number theory, and incommensurable lines. Elements is the oldest extant large-scale deductive treatment of mathematics. It has proven instrumental in the development of logic and modern science, and its logical rigor was not surpassed until the 19th century.

Synopsis How to Prove It by : Daniel J. Velleman
Many students have trouble the first time they take a mathematics course in which proofs play a significant role. This new edition of Velleman's successful text will prepare students to make the transition from solving problems to proving theorems by teaching them the techniques needed to read and write proofs. The book begins with the basic concepts of logic and set theory, to familiarize students with the language of mathematics and how it is interpreted. These concepts are used as the basis for a step-by-step breakdown of the most important techniques used in constructing proofs. The author shows how complex proofs are built up from these smaller steps, using detailed 'scratch work' sections to expose the machinery of proofs about the natural numbers, relations, functions, and infinite sets. To give students the opportunity to construct their own proofs, this new edition contains over 200 new exercises, selected solutions, and an introduction to Proof Designer software. No background beyond standard high school mathematics is assumed. This book will be useful to anyone interested in logic and proofs: computer scientists, philosophers, linguists, and of course mathematicians.

Synopsis Euclidean Geometry by : Mark Solomonovich
This textbook is a self-contained presentation of Euclidean Geometry, a subject that has been a core part of school curriculum for centuries. The discussion is rigorous, axiom-based, written in a traditional manner, true to the Euclidean spirit. Transformations in the Euclidean plane are included as part of the axiomatics and as a tool for solving construction problems. The textbook can be used for teaching a high school or an introductory level college course. It can be especially recommended for schools with enriched mathematical programs and for homeschoolers looking for a rigorous traditional discussion of geometry. The text is supplied with over 1200 questions and problems, ranging from simple to challenging. The solutions sections of the book contain about 200 answers and hints to solutions and over 100 detailed solutions involving proofs and constructions. More solutions and some supplements for teachers are available in the Instructor's Manual, which is issued as a separate book. Book Reviews: 'In terms of presentation, this text is more rigorous than any existing high school textbook that I know of. It is based on a system of axioms that describe incidence, postulate a notion of congruence of line segments, and assume the existence of enough rigid motions ("free mobility")... My gut reaction to the book is, wouldn't it be wonderful if American high school students could be exposed to this serious mathematical treatment of elementary geometry, instead of all the junk that is presented to them in existing textbooks. This book makes no concession to the TV-generation of students who want (or is it the publishers who want it for them?) pretty pictures, side bars, puzzles, games, historical references, cartoons, and all those colored images that clutter the pages of a typical modern textbook, while the mathematical content is diluted more and more with each successive edition.' Professor Robin Hartshorne, University of California at Berkeley. 'The textbook "Euclidean Geometry" by Mark Solomonovich fills a big gap in the plethora of mathematical textbooks - it provides an exposition of classical geometry with emphasis on logic and rigorous proofs... I would be delighted to see this textbook used in Canadian schools in the framework of an improved geometry curriculum. Until this day comes, I highly recommend "Euclidean Geometry" by Mark Solomonovich to be used in Mathematics Enrichment Programs across Canada and the USA.' Professor Yuly Billig, Carlton University.

Synopsis Axiomatic Geometry by : John M. Lee
The story of geometry is the story of mathematics itself: Euclidean geometry was the first branch of mathematics to be systematically studied and placed on a firm logical foundation, and it is the prototype for the axiomatic method that lies at the foundation of modern mathematics. It has been taught to students for more than two millennia as a mode of logical thought. This book tells the story of how the axiomatic method has progressed from Euclid's time to ours, as a way of understanding what mathematics is, how we read and evaluate mathematical arguments, and why mathematics has achieved the level of certainty it has. It is designed primarily for advanced undergraduates who plan to teach secondary school geometry, but it should also provide something of interest to anyone who wishes to understand geometry and the axiomatic method better. It introduces a modern, rigorous, axiomatic treatment of Euclidean and (to a lesser extent) non-Euclidean geometries, offering students ample opportunities to practice reading and writing proofs while at the same time developing most of the concrete geometric relationships that secondary teachers will need to know in the classroom. -- P.
