ETYMA II is an undergraduate or advanced high school textbook for English vocabulary-building. It is divided into three parts, beginning with a brief history of foreign words in English, including information on families of languages, the Indo-European relations of English, and the development of the language. This is followed by two large sections on the Latin and Greek element in English. In every section, numerous exercises help students work closely with the material. Each of the practical word-building chapters ends with a summary “what you should know” as well as adequate reviews. Complete reviews of material are included between every few chapters. Games, projects, vocabulary notes on history in words, words in contexts, odd and interesting words are included in every lesson to keep students’ interest alive, especially in the more arid chapters on the nuts and bolts of vocabulary building.

This book presents an empirical study of syllable structure and phonotactic restructuring in six Caribbean creoles with Dutch, English and French as main lexifier languages. It is shown that, although some structures are more commonly permitted than others, there is considerable cross-creole variation, especially with respect to word-final structures. The findings provide support for recent SLA approaches to the emergence of creole phonology.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Gesture in Human-Computer Interaction and Simulation, GW 2005, held in May 2005. The 22 revised long papers and 14 revised short papers presented together with 2 invited lectures were carefully selected from numerous submissions during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. The papers are organized in topical sections on human perception and production of gesture, sign language representation, sign language recognition, vision-based gesture recognition, gesture analysis, gesture synthesis, gesture and music, and gesture interaction in multimodal systems.

The classical view of categories was that they were discrete and based upon clusters of properties which were inherent to the entities. This manual is the first comprehensive account of Brazilian Portuguese linguistics written in English, offering not only linguists but also historians and social scientists new insights gained from the intensive research carried out over the last decades on the linguistic reality of this vast territory. In the 20 overview chapters, internationally renowned experts give detailed yet concise information on a wide range of language-internal as well as external synchronic and diachronic topics. Most of this information is the fruit of large-scale language documentation and description projects, such as the project on the linguistic norm of educated speakers (NURC), the project “Grammar of spoken Portuguese”, and the project “Towards a History of Brazilian Portuguese” (PHPB), among others. Further chapters of high contemporary interest and relevance include the study of linguistic policies and psycholinguistics. The manual offers theoretical insights of general interest, not least since many chapters present the linguistic data in the light of a combination of formal, functional, generative and sociolinguistic approaches. This rather unique feature of the volume is achieved by the double authorship of some of the relevant chapters, thus bringing together and synthesizing different perspectives.

Blends, unlike compounds, are excluded from grammar and word-formation in the traditional view, hence they are dichotomous under the either-or paradigm. From a cognitive linguistic standpoint, this book investigates the nature of the link between compounds and blends. To accomplish such a task, a data set on both kinds of word-formation is investigated to determine whether the border between the two types of neologism is clear. The researcher’s hypothesis that the boundaries between compounds and blends are blurred is confirmed, including cases belonging to the fuzzy border. An alternative classification might be one that considers compounds and blends to be shades of grey. Only typical compounds and typical blends show some "difference" at the level of form, which can be explained as a metonymical extension. In addition, the internal structure of both compounds and blends is investigated to discover the schemas present. Compounds and blends have roughly the same schemas, according to the findings.
