Synopsis Multiculturalism, Multilingualism and the Self by : Danuta Gabryś-Barker
This book offers several insights into cross-cultural and multilingual learning, drawing upon recent research within two main areas: Language Studies and Multilingual Language Learning/Teaching. It places particular emphasis on the Polish learning environment and Poles abroad. Today’s world is an increasingly complex network of cross-cultural and multilingual influences, forcing us to redefine our Selves to include a much broader perspective than ever before. The first part of the book explores attitudes toward multiculturalism in British political speeches, joking behaviour in multicultural working settings, culture-dependent aspects of taboos and swearing, and expressive language of the imprisoned, adding a diachronic perspective by means of a linguistic study of The Canterbury Tales. In turn, the studies in the second part focus on visible shifts in contemporary multilingualism research, learners’ attitudes towards multiple languages they acquire, teachers’ perspectives on the changing requirements related to multiculturalism, and immigrant brokers’ professional experience in the UK.

Quality Talk has been found to successfully enhance students' reading comprehension and higher-level thinking in American contexts. It offers an introduction to Quality Talk and demonstrates how it can be implemented in college level English classes. It addresses students’ three levels of English proficiency: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. The respective chapters discuss a range of aspects: students' language proficiency levels, students' own viewpoints on the discussion approach, students' academic backgrounds, teaching materials, and culture-based learning. Readers will gain valuable insights into the Quality Talk approach and how it can be implemented in the classroom.

Synopsis Literacy for Children in an Information Age: Teaching Reading, Writing, and Thinking by : Vicki Cohen
LITERACY FOR CHILDREN IN AN INFORMATION AGE was developed in response to the urgent need for a literacy methods book that is relevant in today's information-driven society. Cowen and Cohen present a modern, useful text that defines literacy using technology and meets the changing needs of K-12 instructors, providing practical tips for integrating technology into literacy instruction. As technology has had a profound impact on the nature of K-12 teaching-especially the teaching of reading and writing-some scholars believe that today's digital technologies have changed the meaning of literacy. Similarly, nearly every state has included technology-related competencies in their standards at nearly every grade level. With this in mind, LITERACY FOR CHILDREN IN AN INFORMATION AGE also includes examples of best practices, software packages, and websites. Synopsis The Anchored Angel by : José García Villa
Jose Garcia Villa was an elusive figure in American literary circles. At the height of his career in the 1940s and 1950s, Villa was part of an elite literary circle that included Marianne Moore, e. e. cummings, Dame Edith Sitwell, Dylan Thomas, and W.H. Auden. His first book of poetry, Have Come, Am Here, won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in 1942, the first of many other awards. Yet, despite numerous accolades, he has been largely dismissed in the United States where his reputation was built and has been criticized in Asian American studies for not being "ethnic" enough. The Anchored Angel rediscovers the work of this fierce: conoclast by reprinting a selection of his writing and providing rich secondary materials, including a complete bibliography.
