Synopsis The Present State of Old English Furniture (Classic Reprint) by : Robert Wemyss Symonds

Excerpt from The Present State of Old English Furniture This book is the outcome, therefore, of a desire to help the collector by pointing out the lines along which the Author worked and which have led him to the conclusions presented in these pages, so that the amateur may begin his career as a collector with a certain knowledge which the author ventures to think could otherwise only be obtained by long experience. The Author wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to all those who have so kindly permitted the illustration of pieces of furniture from their collections, and especially to Mr. Percival D. Griffiths, who has been more than generous in this respect. His thanks are also due to Mr. J. De Haan, for some valuable information concerning recipes used by the imitator; to Mr. Cooper of Messrs. Cooper 65 Humphries, for his care and skill in photographing most of the examples illustrated; and, finally, to Mr. J. H. Elder-duncan and Mr. J. Chichele Plowden, for their suggestions during the compilation and revision of the manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Early English Furniture and Woodwork, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by : Herbert Cescinsky

Excerpt from Early English Furniture and Woodwork, Vol. 2 The next type, Fig. 2, which also belongs to the thirteenth century, is where the front is formed with very wide upright styles fixed flush to the centre and acting as huge clamps. The tenons of the central panel are secured in the mortises of these vertical clamps by large wooden pegs, which are here allowed to project, and are finished Off as ornamental features. The entire front is fixed to the Sides with heavy wrought-iron nails. This chest is rare, for its date, in being ornamented with roundels and geometrical devices in chip-carving. As a rule, thirteenth-century chests are plain, and tracery was never applied. This Earl Stonham chest is supported on large runners, kept well away from the ends to minimise any tendency to sagging of the bottom. Synopsis Early English Furniture and Woodwork, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by : Herbert Cescinsky

Excerpt from Early English Furniture and Woodwork, Vol. 1 N the attempt to write a history of English furniture and woodwork showing its development in an orderly progression, one is confronted by an initial difficulty; where to begin. Of woodwork prior to the fourteenth century we know very little, and of furniture practically nothing. Even if isolated specimens, for illustration, were available. Synopsis Old English Furniture from the 16th to the 19th Centuries by : George Owen Wheeler

Excerpt from Old English Furniture From the 16th to the 19th Centuries: A Guide for the Collector Many thoroughly genuine ple-ces of furniture of course exist which are devoid of this most desirable surface-con dition, but the wise collector leaves these alone, whilst the less critical man will do well to eschew them until he is an advanced judge. The patinated condition, in fact, constitutes not only a hall-mark, but an added beauty, just as an old-fashioned lawn excels all those of modern creation, given similar conditions and surroundings. T\this falling short may be due to one or more of a host of reasons. The example may have been neglected or have stood in a damp or an exposed position, such as a stable, a barn, or an outhouse, and in mentioning this it IS cui'ious how old Jacobean chests, for instance, are frequently found in stables acting as corn-bins. The chair, table. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis A Glossary of English Furniture of the Historic Periods (Classic Reprint) by : J. Penderel-Brodhurst

Excerpt from A Glossary of English Furniture of the Historic Periods The output of books upon furniture, English and foreign, has of late years acquired a very large volume, and the work of almost every period has been described and illustrated, often many times over. But amid this extensive and ever-growing literature there 13 still no work of reference which, with simplicity and brevity and in a handy form, defines the meaning and scope of the technical terms and historical allusions to be found upon almost every page of any book dealing with furniture. N 0 subject, and this, perhaps, least of all, can profitably be studied without a clear understanding of the descriptive language which has grown up around it. Dictionaries are of little help to the general reader and of still less to the student, and the lack of anything in the nature of a reasonably full and systematic Glossary of English Furniture, embodying the names and dates of the great exemplars of the famous English styles, led the authors to make this attempt to fill the gap.
