This book explores the interfaces of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogy. It presents the theoretical aspects of ELF, discusses issues and challenges that ELF raises for the EFL classroom, and demonstrates how EFL practitioners can make use of ELF theorizing for classroom instruction, teacher education, developing language learning materials, policymaking and testing and assessment. Accounts of innovative and practical pedagogical practices and researchers’ insights from diverse geographical, cultural and institutional contexts will inform and inspire EFL practitioners to reconsider their practices and adopt new techniques in order to meet their learners’ diverse communicative needs in international contexts.

Lingua Franca (LF) is the term used when referring to a common language between interlocutors of different native languages, usually of also different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Back in the 14nth century AC, the expansion of trade between people of different ethnicities around the Mediterranean area, led to the creation of a pidgin language, a language with simple grammar and lexicon, which made communication between traders possible. This pidgin language was a mixture of mostly Italian with additions from other languages like French, Spanish, Arabic, Greek and Turkish. Today the term Lingua Franca has expanded to include vehicular languages used around the world used amongst people with different origins and native languages. English is the current, most widespread language to be used as a lingua franca, raising issues of proper definition, effective methods of research, successful teaching and evaluation and respect for the global multicultural environment of the world today.

This book provides an in-depth exploration of World Englishes and their place in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. It opens with a critical assessment of the research to date that includes analysis of competing and complementary terms such as English as an International Language (EIL), Global English, English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and 'Glocal English'. Here, and throughout the work, the author problematizes the terminologies used to define and describe Englishes, arguing for example for the need to distinguish between Chinglish and China English. The book then turns to an examination of three case study varieties of non-inner circle English: Konglish, Singlish and Indian English; before exploring the results of an original empirical study into language attitudes concerning several varieties of English among language teachers and learners. Finally, sample exercises for the classroom are provided. This book will be of particular interest to language teachers and teacher trainers, and to students and scholars of EFL and applied linguistics more broadly.
